How to set Google Chrome as the default browser on iPhone and iPad

You can now use Google Chrome as the default browser on your iPhone or iPad.

For several versions of iOS and iPadOS we can change the default browser on our iPhone or iPad. That is, we can configure Google Chrome, for example, as an alternative to Safari and that each link received by apps like Mail or WhatsApp opens by default in the Google app.

This feature is only available with the iPhones with iOS 14 or later installed and iPads with iPadOS 14 or later as operating system. In iOS we have been able to have alternative browsers to Safari for a long time, but before they could not be used as the main browser.

Set Google Chrome as the default browser on iPhone

The procedure for change google chrome preferences and that it can be set as the default browser on the iPhone or iPad is as follows, it is the same if you want to use another browser as the default on your iPhone or iPad:

  • On your iPhone or iPad go to Settings.
  • Look for Google Chrome, it will be in the lower area where the app settings are.
  • Within Chrome you will see an option called “Default Browser App”.
  • Upon entering, Safari will be selected.
  • Tap Chrome to use it by default.

Once you activate Chrome as the default browser, a new tab will appear in Settings > Safari from which we can reconfigure the Apple browser as the default browser.

This option is also compatible with other browsers, such as Firefox, if they have been updated to be compatible with this new feature. You can set them as the default browser by following the same steps.
