Epic Games not affected by Google’s third party app billing system for Spotify

Epic Games’ Fortnite is not available on the Apple App Store and Google Play.

Epic says a deal from Google doesn’t change the anti-competitive status quo. Google recently started letting select developers test its payment system within apps.

Epic Games isn’t impressed with Alphabet-owned Google’s new program, which lets select Android developers test their own billing systems. The gaming company is embroiled in a protracted legal battle with Apple and Google to remove Fortnite from the respective App Store. Epic VP of Public Policy, Corey Wright, said in a statement to The Verge, “Apple and Google continue to abuse their market power with policies that stifle innovation, drive up prices and reduce consumer choice.” We do.” The comment comes after Google picked Spotify and a few. More developers to offer payment systems in their apps in addition to Google’s own payment methods.

Epic also told the publication that a deal from Google does not change the anti-competitive status quo. The Fortnite creator claimed, “We will continue to fight for fair and open platforms for all developers and consumers and will work with policymakers and regulators to hold these gatekeepers accountable for their antitrust conduct.”

The company also clarified that it is not part of a pilot program with Spotify and others. However, it is unclear whether Epic was approached by Google for this program.

Details of the new billing system are unclear, and Google has said it will provide more clarity in the coming months. “This pilot will help us increase our understanding of whether user choice billing works for users in different countries and for developers of different sizes and categories,” the company said.

Epic claims that the Apple and Google App Store payment policies take a large portion of app revenue in the form of commissions and called the practice unfair. In August 2020, Epic Games introduced its own billing system that bypassed Apple’s App Store payment system. The company removed Fortnite from the App Store as a fine. The company has also sued Google for removing the game from the Play Store for the same reasons as introducing a local payment system.
