Steve Jobs wanted the first iPhone to be launched without a SIM slot

Apple is aiming to make its devices portless someday and that is why the Cupertino giant made the most controversial decision in 2016 to remove the headphone jack from smartphones. While current rumors suggest that Apple may soon remove the SIM slot from its iPhone models, offering only eSIM support, it has been revealed that former Apple CEO and co-founder Steve Jobs wanted the first iPhone to come without a dedicated SIM slot, Check out the details below.

The iPhone without a SIM slot was conceived years ago!

As the former head of iPod development at Apple, Tony Fadell, released his new book “Build,” the industry veteran has been sharing many unknown stories about his life and his interactions with influential business executives like Jobs. In one such story recently, during an interview at a special History Museum event, Fadell mentions that Steve Jobs was previously against the idea of a SIM slot on the iPhone,

According to Fadell’s statement, during the early development stages of the iPhone, Jobs instructed Apple engineers to build the first iPhone without a dedicated SIM slot. The former CEO made important decisions when it came to products, and therefore, told the engineers working on the iPhone project that “We don’t want another hole in it.,

According to Fadell, Jobs revealed that the iPhone will be able to work without a SIM slot using the CDMA network. He used Verizon as an example and highlighted how the carrier was known to have CDMA networks rather than GSM. CDMA networks, for those unaware, work without a SIM card because the device is connected directly to the carrier’s network.

anymore, Fadell mentioned that he had to use market data to convince Steve Jobs That it may be risky to use CDMA instead of GSM for the first iPhone due to the small adoption rate. The iPod chief also pointed out how risky it was to face Jobs’ decision, given his reputation with version-1 products. Therefore, Fadell said that “When you work with a high-minded person, especially when they can get V1 so right, and you have to go against them, make sure you bring in the data.”

For those who don’t know, Apple is now looking to launch an iPhone without a SIM slot and the iPhone 15 could be the first one without it.

So, do you think the iPhone would have been as successful as the first model without a SIM slot? Tell us your thoughts on this in the comments below, and stay tuned for more such interesting stories from the tech world.
