So we can calibrate the HDR of our TV with a PlayStation or Xbox to obtain the best image quality in games

HDR is a fantastic technology to enjoy movies and series in their maximum splendor, correcting the overexposure and underexposure of the image so as not to lose any detail. However, it is not the only content that can benefit from this technology, since it is also a great advance in video games. The most current consoles have native options to configure and calibrate the HDR at our whim and in this article we show you how to do it easily.

Whether you have a PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, or an Xbox Series X/S, it is possible to calibrate the HDR to get the most out of it on our television and improve the image quality of the titles we play. To do this, you just have to follow a few simple steps in the HDR adjustment tool that both platforms have.

How to calibrate HDR on PS4 and PS5

Sony incorporates an HDR calibration tool in its latest generation consoles. To access it, just go to Settings > Display and video > Adjust HDR. Of course, the first thing will be to know if our television is compatible with HDR and have it active on the console. To do this, simply leave the HDR option in the console settings on ‘Automatic’.

Once in the HDR adjustment tool, we just have to follow the steps indicated. Here you only have to adjust the maximum and minimum brightness of the screen when HDR mode is active. To do this we have to go up or down with the console control until the symbol is barely visible. This adjustment is divided into three steps, with the panel completely white and also when it is completely dark.

How and why you need to calibrate your TV for the best picture quality

After having adjusted the HDR, once we run a game that supports a high dynamic range mode, the image will be viewed with the set HDR limits of brightness. This must be accompanied by a good calibration of the television image. Here is a guide on how to easily calibrate your TV screen.

Microsoft’s console also has a native tool to adjust HDR in games. As with PlayStation, on it we will also have to set the maximum and minimum brightness limits when a title is running in HDR. To access this tool, all we have to do is go to Settings > General > TV and display options > Calibrate HDR for gaming.

in the tool, all we have to do is set the minimum and maximum brightness limits when HDR is active. The console will show us a series of patterns that we must modify until the symbols or elements are barely visible at each step.

Once the HDR is configured, we already have our console ready to run the games with this mode activated. Do not forget that to access this configuration, our television has to be compatible with HDR. If it is, we must activate all types of HDR in the ‘Video modes’ section. We also recently published an article on how to calibrate the television image through an Xbox Series X or S console, something to keep in mind if we want to obtain the best image that the television can offer us.
