Xiaomi Memory extension: What is it and why should you have it activated or deactivated on your mobile

Activate or not the function of Xiaomi Memory extension. We explain what it is and why or not it is a good idea to do it.

With the increase in users every year using smartphones for all kinds of tasks, manufacturers have had to improve their features. With this increase, they have managed to make our small pocket devices even resemble or be used as computers.

The problem of having more and more power and larger and heavier applications comes with the management of RAM. More and more, we need more RAM to open and maintain apps on Android.

Miui 12.5 has brought the possibility of activating this functionality on our devices

For this reason, Xiaomi at the time activated a new functionality called Memory Extension to help have more RAM memory available on our devices.

What is Xiaomi Memory Extension

Just like computers do some create additional virtual memory to be able to use it during peak loads. We call this virtual memory. It is based on using part of the hard drive storage as Flash storage (RAM).

At the time, mobile manufacturers wanted to do the same and, for this reason, they devised the expansion of virtual memory. Xiaomi did not want to be left behind and did the same in this case and, since MIUI 12.5, it has included this functionality in some of its smartphones.

How to activate Memory Extension on Xiaomi

Activating Memory Extension on Xiaomi should be nothing to write home about. We can find it within the additional settings in our Xiaomi system:

  • We open the settings menu on our Xiaomi smartphone.
  • We go down in the settings menu until we find additional settings.
  • Once inside, we go down until we find Memory Extension or Memory Extension.
  • If we activate it, the system will need to be restarted, adding an additional 3GB of RAM to our system if possible.

The next time we want to deactivate the function we will have to restart the mobile again.

Note: Function only available with some devices that include MIUI 12.5.

Why activate Memory Extension on our smartphone

Although it is true that today we are not going to have problems in general with our smartphones and we should not have a problem with RAM memory either, enabling the Memory Extension function might be a great idea a priori.

Activating the function will help to have a better management of the RAM memory in our device and will also speed up the operating system, making the applications more free to run on our mobile.

Why not activate Memory Extension on our smartphone

Although it is true that activating this function can be essential in our device, especially if we have a device that has little RAM, could slow down video games.

By using the storage memory and not the RAM, normally the applications that use the RAM tend to run more smoothly, so we get a better execution of them. By cons, if we run a game in storage memory, since it is not so fast, the games will not run as smoothly.

In summary, if we have a mobile with which we are not going to play much and we have enough storage space, we strongly recommend activating this function to help our terminal. Otherwise, it is better to leave it disabled.
