Russia reactivates its trolls and bots ahead of Tuesday’s midterm

The user on Gab who identifies as Nora Burka reappeared in August after a year of silence on the social media platform, reposting a handful of messages with intensely conservative political themes before writing a stream of original vitriol. did.

The posts mostly discredited President Biden and other prominent Democrats, sometimes obscenely. He also lamented the use of taxpayer dollars to support Ukraine in the war against invading Russian forces, painting Ukraine’s president as a caricature straight out of Russian propaganda.

The fusion of political concerns was no coincidence.

According to cyber security group Recorded Future, the account was first linked to the same secret Russian agency that interfered in the 2016 presidential election and then in 2020 at the Internet Research Agency in St.

This group and other researchers have identified this as a new, though more narrowly targeted, Russian effort ahead of Tuesday’s midterm elections. The goal, as before, is to incite anger among conservative voters and undermine confidence in the American electoral system. This time, it also appears to be intended to undermine the Biden administration’s broader military aid to Ukraine.

“It is clear they are trying to cut them off aid and funding to Ukraine,” said Alex Plitsch, a former Army soldier and Pentagon information operations officer who is now with Providence Consulting Group, a commercial technology company.

The campaign – using accounts such as Nora Burka as angry Americans – has added fuel to some of the most divisive political and cultural issues in the country today.

It has specifically targeted Democratic candidates in most contested races, including Senate seats in Ohio, Arizona and Pennsylvania, calculating that a Republican majority in the Senate and House of Representatives could help the Russian war effort.

The campaigns show not only how vulnerable the US political system is to foreign manipulation, but also how advocates of misinformation have developed and adapted by major social media platforms to remove or run false or misleading content .

Last month, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Cyber Security and Infrastructure Security Agency issued warnings of the threat of “disinformation spread by dark web media channels, online journals, messaging applications, spoofed websites, emails, text messages and fake online individuals.” “Disinformation may include claims that voting data or results were hacked or tampered with.

The agencies urged people not to like, discuss or share online posts from unknown or untrusted sources. He did not identify specific efforts, but social media platforms and researchers have recently uncovered a variety of campaigns by Russia, China and Iran.

Recorded Future and two other social media research companies, Graphica and Mandiant, found several Russian campaigns that have turned to Gab, Parlor, Getter and other new platforms that pride themselves on creating unmodified spaces in the name of free speech.

These are much smaller campaigns than the 2016 election, where unauthorized accounts accessed millions of voters across the political spectrum on Facebook and other major platforms. The efforts are no less harmful, however, in reaching influential users who can help serve Russian objectives, the researchers said.

“The audience is very small compared to your other traditional social media networks,” said Brian Liston, a senior intelligence analyst at Recorded Future who identified the Nora Burka account. “But you can engage the audience in more targeted influence ops because the people who are on these platforms are generally American conservatives who are probably accepting conspiratorial claims.”

Many of the accounts the researchers identified had previously been used by a news outlet calling itself a newsroom for US and European based citizens. Facebook and Instagram owner Meta has previously linked the news outlet to Russian information campaigns centered around the Internet Research Agency.

The network appears to have since disbanded, and several social media accounts associated with it became inactive after being publicly identified around the 2020 election. In August and September the accounts began to re-activate, with sleeper sale-like action called for.

Nora Burka’s account on Gab has many characteristics of an unauthenticated user, Mr Liston said. No profile picture or biographical details are identified. No one responded to the message sent to the account through Gab.

The account, with over 8,000 followers, posts exclusively on political issues – not just in one state but across the country – and often spreads false or misleading posts. Most have little engagement but a recent post about the FBI got 43 responses and 11 replies, and was reposted 64 times.

Since September the account has repeatedly shared links to a previously unknown website – ElectionTruth.net – which Recorded Future said was almost certainly linked to the Russian campaign.

ElectionTruth.net from the starting date of the post 5th September only; Since then, it has posted articles almost daily ridiculing President Biden and leading Democratic candidates, while criticizing policies about race, crime, and gender, saying they were destroying the United States. “America under Communism” was a typical title.

All articles have pseudonyms as bylines, such as Andrew Jay, Truth4Ever and Laura. According to Mr Liston, the website domain was registered using bitcoin accounts.

For your contact information, electiontruth.net lists a cafe inside a converted gas station in Kotor, Ark., a town of 900 people at the bend in the White River. However, the cafe has been closed, and has been replaced by Cotter Bridge Market, a produce store and deli, whose owners said they knew nothing about the website. No one on Election Truth responded to requests for comment submitted through the site.

Mr Liston said the links to ElectionTruth.net appear to be closely synced with Gab’s accounts linked to Russia.

In another campaign, Graphica identified a recent series of cartoons appearing on gab, getr, parlor and discussion forum patriots.win. The cartoon, by an artist named “Schmitz”, humiliated Democrats in the toughest Senate and gubernatorial races.

The one targeting Georgia Senator Raphael Warnock, who is black, employs racist motifs. Another falsely claimed that Representative Tim Ryan, the Democratic Senate candidate in Ohio, would release “all Fentanyl distributors and drug traffickers” from prison.

According to Graphica, the cartoon got very little engagement and did not go viral on other platforms.

A recurring theme of the new Russian effort is an argument that the United States under President Biden is wasting money by supporting Ukraine in its resistance to the Russian invasion that began in February.

For example, Nora Burka posted a fake photo in September showing Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky as a bikini-clad pole dancer showering dollar bills by Mr. Biden.

“While working-class Americans struggle to find food, gas and baby formula, Joe Biden wants to spend $13.7 billion more in aid to Ukraine,” the account posted. Not coincidentally, that post echoed a topic that has gained some traction among Republican lawmakers and voters who have questioned arms deliveries and other military aid.

Graham Brookie, senior director of the Digital Forensics Lab at the Atlantic Council, said, “It’s no secret that Republicans—a large portion of Republicans—have questioned whether we should be referred to as alien adventures or someone else’s struggle. ” , which also monitors foreign influence operations.

The FBI and the Cyber Security and Infrastructure Security Agency did not respond to requests for comment about the Russian efforts. Mr Brooke called the revived accounts “repetitive behaviour”. Gab did not respond to a request for comment.

As in the past, it can be difficult to measure the exact impact of these accounts on voters coming in on Tuesday. At the very least, they contribute to what Edward P. Perez, a board member of the OSET Institute, a non-partisan election security organization, has called “created chaos” in the country’s politics.

Whereas in the past Russians garnered large followings for their unauthenticated accounts on major platforms, today’s campaigns may be smaller and still achieve the desired effect – partly because the divisions in American society already exist. It is such fertile soil for propaganda, he said.

“Since 2016, it appears foreign states may be taking a few feet off the gas,” Mr Perez, who previously worked on Twitter, said, “because they have already created such a substantial division that many Bring the water of propaganda for domestic actors.
