These days, a text is rarely just text. As emoji have emerged on smartphones over the past 10 years, they have given us a new language to communicate with with a smile, wink and heart. Emoji can trace their roots to emoticons of the early 1980s – if you’re old enough to remember life before smartphones, you’ve probably used the smiley emoticon, :-), a colon, Made up of dashes and closing brackets. Emoji, however, are a massive set of characters available through iOS, Android, Windows, and macOS.

Some people use emojis sparingly in messages, while others are almost mastered in communication and can use them like modern-day hieroglyphs.

Emoji is, well, an online encyclopedia of emoji. The website divides emoji into eight categories, including smileys and people, objects, activities, and more. Clicking on a category like Smileys and People will open a specific list of emoji, including, you guessed it, smileys and people, as well as family, hand gestures, clothing, and accessories.

For example, if you click on “?” (smiling face with sweat), the emoji will give you a brief description of the emoji, what it meant, when it became the official emoji, and other possible names for it.

The most recent batch of emoji were released in September 2021 with Emoji 14.0; Apple’s iOS 15.4 was the latest update to bring new emoji to all users.
