The takeover of Twitter by Elon Musk and the changes he makes caused chaos on the platform. As a result, a graphic has appeared on the “verified” Nintendo account showing Mario showing his middle finger to the fans. We explain what’s going on.

Elon Musk’s reign on Twitter began not only with mass layoffs, but also the introduction of a new service called Twitter Blue. It consists in the fact that portal users, for the amount of $ 8 a month, can, among others receive a special badge next to the profile picture, which informs about the authenticity of the account. Until now, this symbol was reserved only for public figures. So it is not difficult to guess what happened when literally everyone interested had this privilege.

After the service was launched, fake, but at the same time, verified accounts began to appear, like mushrooms after the rain. One of the first companies to fall victim to this chaos was Nintendo.
A joker decided to impersonate a Japanese corporation and greeted Twitter users with a graphic of the sympathetic plumber Mariowhich shows a less sympathetic middle finger gesture (via David Milner).

Of course, there are many more cases of this type. The company Valve was the victim of another joke. On the “verified” profile of Steam owners, the launch of a new platform – Neon Prime, was announced, which is of course a lie. In addition, “official” profiles of politicians, athletes and Jesus Christ himself began to appear on Twitter.
How easy is it to check the authenticity of a profile?
It is worth remembering that we can easily verify whether we are actually in contact with a real account or a subscriber of the Twitter Blue service. All you have to do is click on the symbol next to the profile picture. However, at first glance there is no difference whatsoever and this leads to a great deal of chaos. As a result, the website tries to deal with this situation in various ways.
It will get worse
One of them was to be a special authentication tag for some verified accounts. Unfortunately, after a few hours, Elon Musk himself abandoned him, claiming that he did not like it. Interestingly, the billionaire also admitted that “Twitter is going to do a lot of stupid things in the coming months” (via Eurogamer). This means that we should prepare ourselves for even more confusion.
