AWS is on the move again: Implement in Boston

AWS is canceling its re:implementation convention in Texas for the third year in a row, but the event is shipping to Boston instead this time around.

The conference, which focuses on cloud security, compliance, identity and privacy, is now scheduled for July 26-27 in Boston, the same city where AWS held the inaugural gathering in 2019.

There was no word from the cloud provider whether the political and cultural wars of Texas were a factor in its decision to bypass the state, which is rapidly becoming a hotbed of new tech jobs, while its policies remain in line with the tech company’s values. seem opposite. An AWS spokesperson confirmed the new location and date of the conference on Sunday.

Some tech industry activists welcomed AWS’s relocation decision via Twitter, including Corey Quinn, chief technology officer and cloud economist at The Duckbill Group and frequent AWS critic.

Quinn tweeted The move “may be one of the biggest things I think Amazon will ever achieve, both logically and ethically.”

“Thanks, Amazon. This one counts,” he said one more Tweet.

Greg Abbott of Texas Gov. has come under fire for a February directive asking the state Department of Family and Protective Services to investigate certain gender-affirming treatments for transgender youth as alleged “child abuse” under Texas law. is required. Tech companies are among those to criticize the directive, which has been temporarily pending in a court of law review, Texas’ policy against a vaccine mandate, its ban against most abortions, and the fight over the critical race theory have also been divisive hot-button issues for the state.

AWS had planned to hold re:apply in 2020 and 2021 in Houston as well. After calling off the 2020 conference altogether due to the coronavirus pandemic, AWS canceled last year’s in-person event citing an elevated COVID-19 threat level in Houston and instead offered a free , held the virtual version.

Registration information for the AWS Re: Apply 2022 conference in Boston, according to the AWS web page for the event is coming soon. The cloud provider will also have free livestreams of keynote speeches and leadership sessions, while it will record other sessions for release after the conference.
