The seat-of-the-pants style is based on experience, instinct, or guesswork and relies on one’s personal experience and judgment rather than objective measures or technology.


What Gates thinks about Musk’s decision-making style

Musk’s decision-making style on Twitter is “seat-of-the-pants”, according to Gates, who believes the fellow tech billionaire’s management style could increase polarization on the platform.

“I think, certainly, the Twitter situation is exacerbating things. Instead of an objective set of measures taken by a broad group of people, you’re seeing seat-of-the-pants type activity, The Microsoft co-founder told the Financial Times in an interview.

He further suggested that social media companies “need to focus on things that incite riots or create huge misconceptions about the safety of vaccines or masks or those kinds of things.” Battling misinformation was challenging “even for a fair-minded person with the best technology in the world and an infinite staffing budget,” he told the publication.

Gates and Musk have expressed conflicting opinions in the past on a number of issues such as space travel and climate change.

Earlier in May this year, Gates had said that Tesla and SpaceX CEO Musk could potentially make micro-blogging site Twitter a ‘worse’ platform. According to CNN, Gates cautioned on Musk’s $44 billion takeover deal of Twitter, saying that Musk “could actually make it worse”.
