Oura Ring may have a worthy competitor in the upcoming AV

The best smartwatches and fitness trackers do an excellent job of tracking your health – they wouldn’t be the best if they didn’t. But for those looking for even more low-profile options, it’s a bit of a desert right now. The Aura Ring has been hugely popular for three generations, but it only provides comprehensive health data to wearers with a monthly subscription. California-based Movano Health is looking to flip the script with its new smart ring designed specifically for women.

The AV is capable of monitoring heart rate variability, SpO₂, resting heart rate and skin temperature variability in addition to being able to track ovulation, periods, menstrual symptoms. On top of these statistics, the AV will also provide detailed information on active minutes, steps taken in a day, sleep phases, mood, etc.

Movano Health says it will relay the data as “actionable insights” through a mobile app. These insights, it claims, will enable women to make the necessary lifestyle changes to reduce their chances of contracting chronic diseases.

However, it won’t be making money off that data permanently: It’s all included with the AV Smart Ring’s sub-$300 purchase price. Compare this to the latest Aura Ring, which charges $299 for the ring and $6 per month for data analysis.

The ring itself is made of polished aluminum and will be available for purchase in three finishes, which were not specified in the press release. Movano said consumers can buy the Evie Smart Ring in sizes 5 to 11.

The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has not approved Movano’s claims about the AV smart ring, although the company says it “plans to seek” — if approved, the AV would be the first medical device on the market. -grade smart ring will be made.

The ring went through a hypoxia test in October, returning clinical SpO₂ and heart rate readings in line with FDA accuracy standards. This should allow the manufacturer to market the AV as a pulse oximeter, giving it significant advantages over contemporary smart rings and even fitness trackers.

Movano will offer a hands-on demonstration of the AV Smart Ring to visitors to CES 2023 in Las Vegas next week. The manufacturer didn’t provide an exact timeline for the AV Smart Ring’s availability, saying only that it will be available in mid-2023.

Recent reporting suggests that Google may soon let users control augmented reality glasses using a smart bracelet or ring, so we could be headed toward a future where smart rings are more common than you think. Huh.
