Smartphones will start using 10-core chips. Samsung will be among the first!

Smartphone processors are getting more powerful and efficient every year. With each new model, we observe how capacities are often increased by tens of percent. However, one thing has not changed in recent times.

We are used to the fact that the vast majority of chips, whether mid-range or flagship, consist of eight cores. For example, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 includes one main Cortex-X3 core clocked at 3.2 GHz, two high-performance Cortex A715 cores clocked at 2.8 GHz, two powerful Cortex-A710 cores clocked at 2.8 GHz and three economical 2 GHz Cortex-A510 cores.

The chip architecture is thus based on a theoretically simple balancing of economy and high performance across eight cores. But what would happen if the number of cores increased to ten?

Samsung is planning something big

We didn’t mention Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 just by chance. This chip is used by the new flagships from Samsung, namely the Galaxy S23 series. It is even used by models intended for Europe, which came as a big surprise, as the Galaxy S flagship models here used exclusively Exynos chips.

These processors have not exactly had an easy journey behind them. Compared to competing Snapdragon chips, they were always weaker, less efficient and also overheated more, for which they earned sharp criticism. So this year, Samsung decided to do away with them. But that definitely does not mean that Exynos has run out of steam.

On the contrary. Exynos seems to be making a big comeback. The Chinese informer Ice universe is on the Weibo network posted a postin which he talks about a new chipset with a label Exynos 2400. He claims to make his official debut next year, the portal noted MobilMania.cz.

The architecture of this chip attracted the most attention. It will reportedly consist of one main Cortex-X4 core, two higher-frequency Cortex-A720 cores, three identical lower-frequency cores, and four power-saving Cortex-A520 cores. When we add it all up, we find that The Exynos 2400 will have a total of up to 10 cores.

We do not yet know detailed information about the performance of this chip. More or less, all that is “known” is that it may debut next year together with the Galaxy S24 smartphones.

He won’t be the first

However, it should be noted that the Exynos 2400 is not, or won’t be the first 10-core smartphone chip. MediaTek claimed this championship back in 2015, when it released the Helio X20 based on the now archaic 20 nm manufacturing process. Despite the abundant number of cores, however, it was not very powerful.

However, time has come a long way over the years, which means that Samsung can wipe our eyes with its new chip. After all, it would be about time.
