Wow! Twitter just got less annoying

Weeks after Twitter said it was working on it, the company has finally updated its Android and iPhone apps to bring you back to the timeline you were last viewing.

It’s live for Android and iOS!

Update to the latest version of the app so that “For You” and “Following” default to the tab you last opened.

Here’s what happened: In early January, several months after Elon Musk acquired the company in a $44 billion deal, Twitter introduced two tabs one marked for you that surface tweets using an algorithm. Uses what it thinks you will like according to your past. Twitter behavior, and another that you follow, is called following tweets in chronological order.

The annoying part for users who liked the Following tab was that every time you open the app, it shows For You Tweets, which means you have to swipe left to see your favorite feed. A single swipe may not seem like a big deal, but it’s still an unwanted interruption to the user experience, and it left many people feeling like they were being pushed to see Tweets they weren’t particularly interested in. .

Twitter is keen to get lots of views on its algorithmic For You feed as it contains a fair share of content from people you don’t follow. That way, it hopes you’ll see something that piques your interest and might start following the poster. This increases engagement on the service and increases connections across platforms, which in turn enables Twitter to charge a handsome amount from advertisers.

With or without Elon Musk, Twitter has been toying with alternative feeds for years, often to the irritation of its global community of more than 200 million daily active users.

In 2016, for example, you had to actively select the algorithmic timeline if you wanted to see it. But then it became the default timeline. The move angered many users, forcing Twitter to do an about-face in which it allowed users to return to the feed they were last viewing.

After failing to learn its lesson, Twitter went through the same process again in recent weeks.

Be sure to update the app now to make sure Twitter opens to the feed you were finally viewing. Both tabs stay in place, but you now have full control over which one you want to see at any given time.
