There is a big difference between a handle and a profile name. The handle is the one you sign into Twitter with and the unique name in your Twitter profile URL.

Profile name on the other hand is what you put on your profile, and it can be completely different from your handle.

To change your profile name, click edit Profile to the right, and you’ll now be able to edit various fields in your profile – including your profile name.

Twitter does not currently release inactive or suspended Twitter handles to other people. So, if your desired Twitter handle is missing, try adding numbers or underscores to it to create a unique version instead.

If I change my Twitter handle, will I lose followers?

The action of changing your Twitter handle will not result in the removal of any followers or tweets. The whole name change process is seamless, so your followers won’t even know. However, if you also change your profile name, they may not recognize you immediately or remember why they followed you in the first place. This can lead to some confused people unfollowing you.
