Is this a new dimension of photorealism in games? FPS Unrecord looks insane

Delight and disbelief – this is how players’ reactions to the photorealistic FPS Unrecord trailer can be summed up.

The news is that not much can be achieved in the field of realistic graphics. The DRAMA team has apparently either not heard of it or decided to disprove this statement. Created by the studio FPS Unrecorded in the trailer, it embarrasses many high-budget productions with its visual realism.

Interestingly, realistic graphics are not the first (or even the second) element that the creators mention when promoting their work. As we read on the official website of the game, Unrecorded is primarily a tactical FPS with a unique aiming system, dialogue choices that affect gameplay, and an emphasis on story. And, as mentioned at the very end, a camera view (the so-called body cam) providing a “trompe l’oeil experience” (in reference to illusionistic painting and creating the illusion of three-dimensionality).

This somewhat disrespectful treatment of photorealism is quite funny with the delights of Internet users who are almost entirely focused on graphics, but the French creators have their reasons. Unrecorded because it will not be a simulation focusing on faithful recreation of the real world at any cost. Realism will be “not an obsession but an integral part of the world.”

The developer intends Unrecord to be “comparable” to thrillers and detective novels. As a police officer, we will investigate various crimes, meet a variety of characters, and the stories will be full of plot twists. Dialogues will also affect events, even during combat. Immersion is also to be increased by e.g. a unique aiming system and challenging combat that focuses on “tech and minimalism”.

It all sounds (and, above all, looks) very promising – one would like to say that it is too much. Unrecorded is in the early stages of production and will definitely not be released this year. For now, the only target platform is PC, and the game has neither a release date, nor a publisher (or investor), nor – understandably – hardware requirements. Especially the latter can raise a lot of concerns with such graphics and the use of Unreal Engine 5 technology.

Speaking of which, the admiration for the Unrecord trailer is intertwined with suspicions that it is actually a “pre-rendered” scene, and not an actual gameplay record. Time will tell whether these allegations are justified.

Interested in video games (and not only video games) for years, he completed his master’s degree in Polish studies at the University of Warsaw with a thesis devoted to this very subject. He started his adventure with GOL in 2015, writing in the gaming newsroom, and then also in the film newsroom and – horror of horrors! technological (there was also participation in the encyclopedia of games). He started with platformers and remains a big fan of them (including metroidvanias) to this day, but he also shows interest in card games (including paper ones), fighting games, soulslikes and basically everything related to games as such. Do not ask about graphics issues – after a few hours the author is able to admire pixelated characters from games remembering the times of the Game Boy (if not older).
