Unicorn: Warriors Eternal (2023) – review of the 1st season of the series [HBO Max]. Unicorns, magic and a monk on acid

Unicorn: Warriors Eternal is a new animated series created by Genndy Tartakovsky, known for such hits as Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack and Primal. The series follows a team of ancient heroes who protect the world from a sinister force. However, their awakening comes too early. From now on, they will have to face not only evil, but also their own body.

The main characters of the series are Melinda, Seng and Edred – three unicorn warriors who lived thousands of years ago and were chosen by mythical creatures to defend the good in the entire universe. However, after fighting a powerful evil, they were put to sleep and woken up in 1890 in steampunk London. Unfortunately, the revival did not go as planned. Two of them (Melina and Seng) were awakened in the bodies of teenagers. In addition, they do not remember their past incarnations.

Unicorn: Warriors Eternal (2023) – review of the 1st season of the series [HBO Max]. How did it start?

The series opens with Emma getting ready for her wedding. Unfortunately, her plans are thwarted by the appearance of a steampunk robot named Copernicus. His main task is to awaken our heroes: Melinda (voiced by Hazel Doupe), a powerful witch, Seng (voiced by Demari Hunte), a space monk, and Edred (voiced by Tom Milligan), a warrior elf. However, only in one case does it do so exactly. Seng and Melinda are not so lucky and end up in different bodies. Seng wakes up in a baby’s body and Melinda in Emma’s body.

Trapped in the bride’s body, Melinda can’t unleash her true power, and Emma has absolutely no idea what’s going on – it takes a while for her to realize what’s happened. They both fight each other and over body control. Melinda wants to save the world and sees Emma as a spoiled brat who is incapable of sacrificing herself for the greater good. Emma, on the other hand, wants to regain her life and control of her own body. Edred, on the other hand, cannot understand the behavior of his beloved Melinda, and the space monk is swinging in another dimension. It’s all really fucked up, but after seeing it all, there’s some sense in it all, as well as solving some of the pieces of the scenario puzzle.

Unicorn: Warriors Eternal (2023) – review of the 1st season of the series [HBO Max]. A story full of secrets

Unicorn

Unicorn: Warriors Eternal is full of action, suspense, but above all, it consists of many secrets. It is not known exactly who the unicorns are and why they were awakened in other bodies. It is also unknown who this great sinister force that threatens the world is and what it has to do with unicorns. Besides, why did they just wake up in the days of fictional steampunk London. The series gradually reveals more threads and puzzles that intrigue and encourage you to continue watching. But it won’t reveal everything.

After watching the first season, consisting of 5 episodes of about 20 minutes each, I have to admit that it presents a very interesting concept of steampunk as a science fiction genre that combines technology and society. I was shown a world where robots are commonplace and often better than humans. A world where magic exists and is a source of good and hope. It is an interesting combination of elements of fantasy, comedy and adventure. There is a lot of humor here that comes from the contrast between ancient warriors and modern teenagers. There is no shortage of dynamic action, which looks impressive thanks to Tartakovsky’s characteristic animation. You can’t fault both the created world and the soundtrack (composed by Tyler Bates and Joanne Higginbottom).

Unicorn: Warriors Eternal (2023) – review of the 1st season of the series [HBO Max]. A card with a hint of nostalgia

The series is aimed at an audience that likes original and funny stories with a hint of nostalgia. It harks back to classic 80s and 90s cartoons like He-Man and Thundercats, but has a modern tone and aesthetic. The painting is strongly inspired by the works of Osamu Tezuka and Max Fleischer. It offers an interesting and original story, likeable and complex characters, beautiful and dynamic animation and good music. It’s a real homage to classic childhood cartoons, but with a new and fresh take on it.
