Samsung’s next big-boy foldable won’t get a bigger battery

At least the phone will be a little thinner — fair trade

We’re probably still a few months away from officially learning anything about Samsung’s next-gen foldable phone, but leaks have already begun to paint a picture of what to expect from the Galaxy Z Fold 4. For example, a new report suggests that the phone may enjoy a much-needed camera upgrade along with coming in a slightly different aspect ratio. Now the latest discoveries add new support to some of those rumours, as well as dashing our hopes of any major improvements in battery capacity.

The two batteries powering the Z Fold4 have received their certification in South Korea with 2,002mAh and 2,268 mAh ratings, as spotted by Galaxy Club. If you do the math, that equates to a total capacity of 4,270mAh, which is the same as the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s 4,275mAh capacity – Samsung will likely market it as 4,400mAh, just like the Fold 3. This isn’t great news to know, considering the Fold 3’s battery life has been a major point of concern for some users. We haven’t heard anything new about the phone’s charging speed, but expect Samsung to include 45W support to lessen the sting of the smaller battery capacity.

New reports also indicate the foldable is smaller and thinner – so perhaps we shouldn’t be too hard on Samsung for at least managing to maintain battery capacity. The shrinking size is directly related to the phone’s reported new aspect ratio. According to rumours, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 will feature a 7.56″ folding screen and 6.19″ cover screen, compared to the 7.6″ and 6.7″ displays of the Fold 3 respectively. The outer screen will be a bit wider and hopefully a little more comfortable to type on, and the folding screen will be even more square (which can make those black bars ever so louder during media playback). You can compare the aspect ratios of the Fold4 and Fold3 in IceUniverse’s tweet below.

Earlier rumors suggested that the Galaxy Z Fold 4 would have a built-in S Pen, but recent leaks make that unlikely. Considering how much space the stylus takes up and the current battery struggles, this makes sense.
