Android loses small base to iOS but still has huge lead in smartphone market

Apple’s iOS ecosystem is finally increasing its market share, but the bad news is that its overall presence still can’t deny that Android is the undisputed leader. iPhone users have grown over the past four years, mostly thanks to Apple’s strategy of launching four models each year during this period.

A new report states that Android’s market share now stands at 69.74 percent, which means a drop of more than 8 percent in 2018 compared to the previous report of 77.32 percent. When it comes to iOS, the same report says Apple has noticed. Its market share of iPhones running on the platform has increased from 19.4 per cent to 25.49 per cent.

So, even though iOS share has risen, you can still see a yawning difference between the two mobile platforms. Apple is likely to view this growth as a positive sign, but it is unlikely that the Cupertino-based giant will ever match Android’s leadership position in the market. And there are many reasons to confirm such a forecast.

Android is open-source in nature, allowing manufacturers to try and add their own layers to the software before integrating the device. Apple has always had tight control over how iOS operates, which has allowed the company to roll out new iOS versions for older devices without any hindrance.

Google has attempted to follow up on this model with its Android One program and then the Pixel lineup. But the overall distribution and fragmentation of Android means it may never have complete control like Apple. And while market reports like this reaffirm the belief that Android will always be the overall leader, Google will hardly have a strong role to play in its success, except to make it open source for use and distribution by everyone in the market. be made.

The other main reason for 69 percent of smartphones running Android is that you can get a smartphone with this platform that costs between $150 and $1,000 in the market. iPhones are generally priced high, making it out of reach for aspiring and many consumers in many countries.

Therefore, all these factors tilt the market and future projections in favor of Google and Android for the coming years.
