MSI updates X570 motherboards to overclock Ryzen 7 5800X3D

The new Ryzen 7 5800X3D it is the first CPU from AMD to benefit from the technology 3D V-Cache, a manufacturing technique that allows cache memory to be stacked vertically for significant performance gains. The advantages of the new technology are immediately evident in the benchmarks, allowing the CPU to move ahead of Core i9-12900KF Intel in some titles in the minimum framerate values, obtaining in some games a conspicuous increase even on the maximum FPS.

In an effort to push Ryzen 7 5800X3D’s performance even further, overclocking enthusiasts have it right away bypassed the block of the CPU implemented by AMD due to the voltages chosen for the 3D V-Cache. The highest frequency achieved so far was achieved by TSAIK, which was able to push the processor to a whopping 5.1GHz. To unlock the CPU for overclocking now also motherboard manufacturers like MSI which, as reported by Wccftech, is preparing for the release of a new firmware update for X570 MEG motherboards.

The new BIOS version will support models with external clock generator MEG X570 GODLIKE, Ace and Unify, enabling BCLK overclocking (Base Clock). The BCLK overclock on Ryzen 7 5800X3D was tested last week in some independent tests, but despite this it remains a not very simple practice and not recommended on this CPU. Ryzen 7 5800X3D is in fact not designed for oveclocking, with possible negative effects which, according to some reports, could occur over time in both the chiplet and the 3D V-Cache.

AMD’s warnings and the lack of official oveclock support don’t seem to be stopping enthusiasts, who want to squeeze the CPU’s potential even further. According to a screenshot shown by MSI, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D can run at 4.87GHz and 1.328V setting the BCLK at 107MHz. With these settings, the CPU was able to score 1596 points in the single-core tests and 15488 points in the Cinebench multi-core tests. This results in a performance margin of 7.5% and 4.9% better than the default BCLK value of 100MHz.

Furthermore, tweaking the BCLK would compensate for the lower CPU performance in areas where the large 96MB L3 cache is not exploited. Ryzen 7 5800X3D has in fact a clock from 200 to 400MHz lower than the 5800X without 3D V-Cache, resulting slower in some tests to both external and internal competition.
