Meta’s Project Cambria headset could have 12GB of RAM for multitasking, import logs and possible leaks suggest.
Project Cambria was announced at the end of October at Connect 2021. cambria Not there Quest 3 – Mark Zuckerberg described it as an “advanced and high-end product”, positioned “at the higher end of the price spectrum”, to be sold alongside Quest 2. At one point it was called ‘Quest Pro’ internally.
The Cambria appears to have a more balanced design than the Quest 2, with a smaller frontbox and strap similar to the Quest 2’s Elite Strap accessory. Meta says this is achieved through the use of a pancake lens instead of a Fresnel lens. While the Quest 2 has grainy black and white cameras, the Cambria will feature high resolution color passthrough for mixed reality experiences. It will also include eye tracking and face tracking to play avatars in Social VR.
Zuckerberg told investors yesterday during Meta’s Q1 2022 earnings call that Cambria will be “more focused on work use cases” than the Quest 2, adding that he sees it “eventually replacing your laptop.” Meta is slowly adding productivity features to its VR operating system, branded as Infinite Office. If you have a Logitech K830 or Apple Magic Keyboard, they’ll show up in VR so you can type and use the trackpad to navigate. Triple window support was added to the web browser in August, with window resizing added in December.
Quest 2 handles triple windows just fine most of the time, but the browser is only accessible in home environments. If you want to watch something while it’s inside a VR app, you’ll need to turn it off first. This limit can be only for the device with 6 GB RAM.

Given the Quest 2 is sold in 128GB and 256GB models that is almost certainly the storage size, which amounts to 12GB of RAM.

- suspending 2D and VR apps so you can launch another app and resume your progress “uninterruptedly” later
- Anchoring windows in different areas of your home space, suspended other areas
- The System Windows API (Beta), lets developers insert system dashboard windows (including browsers) into their applications.
It could be argued that Cambria’s additional RAM could be there to handle eye tracking, face tracking and color passthrough – the Pico Neo 3 Pro Eye has 2GB of additional RAM. But it seems that the whole 6 GB will not be needed for these tasks. 12GB of RAM, judging by Zuckerberg’s comments and Brad’s source about work use cases; The Cambria’s hardware may be more capable of multitasking than the Quest 2.
