iPhone 14 Pro leak gives us the ‘best look yet’ at the death of the notch

A leaked photo of what is claimed to be the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro display panels has given us a fascinating look at what could be the design of the new iPhone screen and selfie camera array.

The photo comes courtesy of Twitter user and self-proclaimed content creator sarni, which has claimed to have found this picture on the Chinese social media site Weibo. The definitive source of the photo is unclear, but it appears to have come from someone within the Apple Display supplier.

And the dual punch-hole design of the displays on the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max confirms previous leaks that showed a combination of a pill-shaped cutout with a punch-hole camera or sensor.

This iPhone 14 Pro leak also seems to support other claims that the next-generation Pro iPhones will have slightly thinner bezels and use 19.5:9 and 20:9 aspect ratios respectively. This design should eventually see the removal of the infamous display notch for Pro handsets.

Sadly, it doesn’t feel like the standard next-gen iPhone, and what appears to be the larger iPhone 14 Max will be missing the notch. The picture seems to support the previous rumours, that only the iPhone 14 Pro model will get pill-and-hole display cutouts, while the standard mode will use a notch that feels similar to the iPhone 13 Pro.

Regular and accurate Apple tipster and Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurmani Let’s say the photo gives us “the best look yet at the new Pro cutout.” Still, Gurman also doesn’t think the move away from the notch will be dramatic, noting that it looks like there will be “very little difference” from the space saved by the new front-facing camera and Face ID system.

Still, it could mark a significant design change over the last four generations of the iPhone, all of which have made use of a very noticeable screen notch. We expect the iPhone 14 range to be revealed this fall, possibly in September, and potentially joining the Apple Watch 8 and AirPods Pro 2.
