Microsoft Edge now has its own VPN, is it better than Opera’s?

Everything related to privacy and security in current internet browsers is one of the most careful aspects. Proposals such as Chrome, Firefox or Edge implement new features in order to protect their millions of users.

There is no doubt that one of the companies that is making the most efforts right now is Microsoft with its Edge. This second version of the program, after abandoning the one that was presented with Windows 10, wants to compete with the almighty Google Chrome. It is precisely for this reason that the software giant sends more and more attractive functions to this program based now on Chromium.

Well, we are telling you all this because Microsoft is currently testing a new feature that will surely attract the attention of many. Actually, we mean that it is bringing a VPN or virtual private network to the browser so that we can use it for free. Thus, all those who have a Microsoft account will be able to benefit from this element that increases our privacy on the Internet. It must be borne in mind that this is not the first company that insert a VPN into your browser.

The proposal has long Opera launched its VPN, specifically in 2016, and has been operating ever since. On the other hand, Mozilla has not integrated its VPN into Firefox, but it does have its own and offers better integration into your browser. Now we can also use Microsoft Edge Secure Network. We are talking about a free service on Edge that is powered by cloudflare. This way users who sign up with a Microsoft account get a gig of free data they can use every month.

Edge already has a VPN like Opera, but with differences

We must bear in mind that this is a service that is currently in a testing period. Therefore, this new VPN is not yet available to all users. Those who already have it integrated will see a new secure network icon after activating it in the main menu of the program. From that moment we only have to activate the icon in Edge to control Secure Network in the browser.

We find a selector for turn private connection on or off At any time. We also see the amount of data used and available for that month. In turn, Microsoft points out that this privacy utility is automatically turned off when the browser is closed. This means that we will have to activate it again in the next session to benefit from its functionality.

Once activated, we will have a encrypted connection to create secure browsing on all connections. In this way we achieve greater privacy to, among other things, prevent the collection of browsing data. Also, our Local IP is no longer revealed to the websites we visit. Of course, here we are going to find an important difference with respect to the VPN that includes the browser Opera.

And it is that Microsoft Edge Secure Network offers users one gigabyte of free traffic per month with no option to add more. However, the VPN that includes the Opera browser presents us with a unlimited trafficwhich surely many will appreciate in this case.
