Google Workspace doubles down on warnings for sketchy files

Google is doubling down on its efforts to keep its services free of malware and other suspicious files. At last year’s Google Cloud Next conference, the company promised to take steps to tackle malicious content online, and more recently, those efforts began to materialize in a more visible way, with Google adding to Google Drive. Added warnings for suspicious files and documents. Now, it’s expanding to the company’s entire online productivity suite specifically, to Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets.

As the company announced in its Workspace blog, when you view a file on the web and try to open it in any of Google’s productivity offerings, you’ll see a warning telling you that the file looks suspicious. . Previously, these types of warnings were only available when opening links from a document, but now they apply to individual files as well. These warnings serve the same purpose they currently serve on disk to prevent you from accidentally downloading a malicious file that could infect your system.

Malicious documents aboundthat’s why documents downloaded from the Internet open in read-only “Protected View” in Microsoft Office programs. These malicious documents are not as dangerous in a cloud-based, attached word processor as they are when downloaded to your computer. Since Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides is capable of opening standard Microsoft Office files, it’s good that these services notify you of anything they snoop on before you download the file to your computer to use in Microsoft Office.

Users can expect to start seeing these warnings within the next week as the feature is rolled out. Unless you’re opening docs links from shady places, you maybe You will not see these warnings pop up in your browser. Or at least, we hope you won’t. Just be careful where you’re getting your docs links.
