Google Workspace doubles down on warnings for sketchy files

Google is doubling down on its efforts to keep its services free of malware and other suspicious files. At last year’s Google Cloud Next conference, the company promised to take steps to tackle malicious content online, and more recently, those efforts began to materialize in a more visible way, with Google adding to Google Drive. Added warnings for suspicious files and documents. Now, it’s expanding to the company’s entire online productivity suite specifically, to Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets.

As the company announced in its Workspace blog, when you view a file on the web and try to open it in any of Google’s productivity offerings, you’ll see a warning telling you that the file looks suspicious. . Previously, these types of warnings were only available when opening links from a document, but now they apply to individual files as well. These warnings serve the same purpose they currently serve on disk to prevent you from accidentally downloading a malicious file that could infect your system.

These malicious documents are not as dangerous in a cloud-based, attached word processor as they are when downloaded to your computer. Users can expect to start seeing these warnings within the next week as the feature is rolled out.
