pixie takes flight
Snap has a tiny camera drone that integrates with Snapchat so you can take selfie pictures and videos from a perspective your smartphone can’t reach. It’s called a pixie. Hey!
- The Pixie is $230, which for whatever reason is only available in the US and France.
- And it takes off and lands from your hand.

Fun new flying cameras are always exciting. The idea of a super portable drone is great, and the recently announced Snapchat Pixie quickly garnered attention.
However, we’re compelled to see this new flying smartphone camera: a new entry into the all-but-failing segment of the drone market, and a camera that’s tightly wound into the Snapchat ecosystem.
The Pixie seems to tick all the right boxes for an ultra-portable drone.
- Like it or not, the Pixie is an aircraft, subject to FAA regulation for all outbound flights in the United States.
- Mid-range mobile camera sensor.
- Removable and rechargeable battery.
- Easy-to-use controls.
- Weights 101g, which means it survives the strictest drone laws.
There’s more to it, and the predefined flight modes limit what you can do with the plane, but it’s aimed at taking epic selfies, so the choices are perfect.
Safety is always our number one concern Drone Rush, For that, we should always be talking about those weird drone laws (none of the following applies if you’re flying indoors).
- As we mentioned above, the Pixie is an aircraft subject to FAA regulation for all outbound flights in the United States.
- Meaning by letter of the law, people have to get FAA Trust certification (which is a free trial, at least, and is open to all ages) and get authorization (there are apps that help).
- The rules are more strict for businesses. Pixie has some details here.
Otherwise:
- Now that’s out of the way, did you know that there have been dozens of other drones over the years that look and act very similar to the Pixie?
- The Hover Passport gained enough interest that Apple put it in their stores.
- And AEE Selfie actually transformed into a smartphone case to protect your phone.
- But people increasingly retired those drones from their smartphones.
- Still, we look forward to testing the Snap Pixie, and we hope that the popularity of the social media platform may inspire the next generation of drone pilots. fly safe!
Huawei Foldable
Huawei’s Mate XS 2 Fold was launched this morning. I covered what this means a week ago and it’s pretty much confirmed today:
- It is an out-folding device, i.e. one screen instead of two, with refinements over the previous models. More of the development of the design.
- It is powered by the Snapdragon 888 due to Qualcomm sourcing limitations affecting Huawei.
- And that’s only for China, starting at 9,999 yuan (~$1,515) for the 8GB/256GB variant and going up to 12,999 yuan (~$1,969) for the top-end 12GB/512GB model.
