Strong iPhone growth makes Apple the only smartphone winner so far this year

Strong iPhone growth saw Apple as the only smartphone brand to increase shipments during the first quarter of the year, according to a new market intelligence report. All other major brands saw their shipments shrink anywhere from 4% to 30%.

The independent estimate follows Apple’s earnings report yesterday, when the company revealed that iPhone revenue was up 5.5% year over year…

Canalys measures iPhone shipments rather than revenue, and estimates these climbed 8% year-over-year for a total of 56.5M units.

Global smartphone shipments reached 311.2 million units in the first quarter of 2022, down 11% year over year. Samsung has taken the lead again after refreshing its portfolio for 2022, shipping 73.7 million units, down 4% from a year ago. Apple combined high demand for the iPhone 13 series with the new iPhone SE, driving a solid 8% growth and 56.5 million units shipped. Xiaomi, OPPO and vivo completed the top five.

It’s not possible to directly compare the Apple and Canalys numbers, as shipments don’t equate to sales — and it could work either way. It’s possible for Apple to ship more iPhones than it actually sold in any given quarter (the remainder being kept as inventory), and for resellers to buy iPhones on 30-day terms and meet Apple. It is also possible to sell them in the first quarter. Revenue in the following.

But as shipments and sales finally balance, this will yield a back-of-an-envelope average selling price (ASP) of $895which would suggest that higher-end iPhones are selling well.

Canalys reports that Samsung certainly remained the market leader, thanks to selling smartphone models at all costs, but its shipments were still down 4% year-over-year. Other major brands saw a steep drop of 20-30% in shipments, while smaller brands in the other category saw a decline of 7%.

Canalis also warned of continued disruption due to component shortages.

A strict epidemic control policy has resulted in lockdowns in major cities in China, casting a shadow on the consumer market in the short term. In addition, disruptions in component production and logistics will affect Q2 shipments of most vendors, both in mainland China and around the world. ,

Apple CEO Tim Cook warned yesterday that Apple could see a supply crunch cost the company anywhere from $4B to $8B this quarter. Thereafter, market intelligence reports suggest continued reduction across the four component categories.

Cook said the company saw a record number of iPhone owners upgrading to a new model last quarter, and that switchers — former Android owners switching to iPhones — also grew by an undisclosed double-digit percentage.
