This air quality detector has the most dramatic alert system you’ve ever seen

The canary will faint when the air quality drops below the recommended levels, but everything has a historical explanation.

With the regulatory measures that COVID has forced to adapt, many businesses have had to implement systems that measure the quality of the air in their offices and common spaces. Technology companies have reacted to the rise in demand with new ranges of products for indoor air treatment. Quality meters, purifiers, filters…, are products that are increasingly common to be found in homes around the world.

Canairi’s design avoids screens for a more visual alert system

In this case we are talking about an air quality meter, but with a very special feature. This is Canairi, a control system with CO2 sensors that detect when indoor air quality has dropped below recommended standards. The curious thing about this system is its minimalist and canary-shaped design. When air quality drops to alarming levels, the canary pivots and appears to faint.

Some very original alerts reminiscent of a cruel practice of the past

Although it may seem excessively dramatic, the use of a canary is not merely aesthetic, but has its historical significance. Until 1986 many mining teams around the world they carried caged canaries on their descents into the mines. The reason is that canaries synthesize the air they breathe differently, and emit a dose of fresh air both when inhaling and exhaling, to increase the absorption of oxygen into the bloodstream.

Humans have a slower metabolism in that sense, and that’s why canaries were taken to the mines. When the workers realized that the bird had fainted or died, it was time to leave the mine.. At that time it worked as a cruel alarm that the levels of carbon dioxide and monoxide were reaching dangerous levels for humans. In the case of this device, this historical curiosity has been used to transform it into a dramatic alert system.

Canairi’s design is simple but works very well. Normally air quality detectors are square devices with screens full of data, but this system is much more pleasing to the eye and integrates more naturally into your home. The development team has wanted to flee from the screens and has designed a very original system that has fallen in love with the public on the internet.

The Kickstarter campaign began with a goal of just over $7,000, but success has catapulted it towards enviable numbers. The campaign has raised nearly $350,000, and the company has already designed an international shipping plan. The basic starting price is 116 dollars, and it has shipping to Europe at an extra cost of 10 dollars.
