Apple may not sell more new phones than Samsung, but its dominance in refurbished phones is indisputable.

With mobile phones it is impossible to always be up to date unless you are willing to get into the reselling game. Or that you adhere to the different renewal plans of the manufacturers launched with each new presentation of posh. Buying a new mobile a year is frankly complicated for typical economies. Although there is a somewhat cheaper method: go to refurbished mobiles.

If we are willing to sacrifice the latest novelty (except for special cases) we can always go to refurbished mobiles. These are repaired phones that go on sale again, or store display phones that get tired of being on display and start to count as valid stock. In exchange for lowering the price, of course. And in this sector, those who make more ‘durable’ mobiles are the ones who win. Or else tell Apple. The Americans have taken over 40% of the world of the ‘not new’.

Nobody sells more phones that are not new than Apple

In recent years we have been witnessing a more than interesting contest to take over the throne in the mobile market. For being the brand that sells the most mobiles at the end of the season, although the fight has also been carried over the quarters. Although Samsung has dominated these last generations with AMOLED fistKoreans have suffered in specific quarters.

Apple, for example, has taken the lead in some iPhone launch periods, ending calendar years. Xiaomi has also managed to scratch the top spot globally, once at the European level and dominates some local markets. But that is if we are talking about new phones, fresh out of the box for the first time. When we talk about refurbished mobiles, things change and a lot. No one here is capable of coughing up Apple.

reconditioned

With the data from Counterpoint Research in hand, one of the usual consultants when it comes to discerning who sells more new mobiles than the others, we can now take a look at the world of pre-owned. And that’s where we can see that Apple had, at the close of 2021, nothing more and nothing less than a 40% quota. Four out of ten pre-owned mobiles sold in the year were an iPhone. These are figures to take very, very much into account to realize the size of the US firm’s telephone fleet.

Apple also managed to increase its share in all regions of the planet last year, with special predominance in a Chinese in which he was already selling almost 50% of them each year. Curious, in any case, because it is in China where the vast majority of the brand’s clones circulate (China is peculiar in this tribute and copy). So while Apple doesn’t seem to be able to take the top spot in new phone sales from Samsung, it’s having no trouble dominating this other market. As important as the first. Maybe more.
