Intel Introduces Project Amber for Cloud-to-Edge and On-Premises Security

On day two of Intel Vision, the company focused on solutions to meet today’s security needs for helping businesses prepare for the challenges of tomorrow.

Deepening one of the most important security elements for any organization, the “trust”, Intel has presented an independent trust certification authority in the form of an innovative a service-based security implementation called Project Amber.

The company also demonstrated safe and responsible AI implementations, outlining its strategy for power quantum resistant cryptography for the next era of quantum computing.

“At a time when organizations derive more and more value from the cloud, security has never been more important.”

“Trust goes hand in hand with security and is what our customers expect and demand when using Intel technology,” he said. Greg Lavender, Intel’s Chief Technology Officer, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Software and Advanced Technology Group.

With the introduction of Project Amber, Intel is taking confidential computing to a new level by strengthening the company’s commitment to a zero-trust approach to the attestation and verification of computing resources on the network, at the edge and in the cloud“.

Businesses operate in the cloud and depend on it to support the remote workforce, which requires multiple devices, uninterrupted access and collaboration tools.

Technological solutions must protect data not only in memory and in transit, but also when it is in use, safeguarding valuable resources and minimizing the chances of attack.

Project Amber allows companies to remotely verify the reliability of an IT resource in cloud, edge and on-premise environments. This service operates independently from the infrastructure provider hosting the confidential computing workloads.

Confidential computing, data protection in use by performing calculations in a TEE environment (trusted execution environment) based on hardware, it is a growing market.

Intel Software Guard Extensions (Intel SGX), available on the Intel Xeon Scalable platform, is today one of the main technologies behind confidential computing and enable profitable cloud use cases for organizations that regularly handle sensitive data.

The foundation of trust in a confidential IT environment is established through a defined attestation process. Verifying this reliability is a fundamental requirement for customers who need to protect their data and intellectual property as they move sensitive workloads to the cloud.

Designed to be cloud independent, this service will support sensitive IT workloads in the public cloud, in the private / hybrid cloud and at the edge.

The interposition of a third party to provide attestation helps provide objectivity and independence to improve confidential computing security.

In its first release, Project Amber intends to support confidential computing workloads distributed as containers Bare metal, virtual machines (VMs) and containers running in virtual machines using Intel TEE.

The initial release will support Intel TEE, with plans to extend coverage to platformsdevices and other TEEs in the future.

Intel is also working with some ISVs to enable trust services which include Project Amber. New software tools, such as published APIs that allow ISVs to incorporate Project Amber to enhance software and services, they will integrate Intel’s platforms and technologies and bring greater value to customers and partners.

Intel plans to launch a Project Amber pilot for customers in the second half of 2022followed by full-market availability in the first half of 2023.
