Netflix tells employees they can quit if they don’t want to work on content they disagree with, according to new company culture guidelines

Netflix has updated its company culture guidelines for the first time since 2017 to include an “artistic expression” section that warns employees that they may need to work on content contrary to their personal values.

“Not everyone will likeor agree witheverything on our service,” the memo says. “We let viewers decide what’s appropriate for them, versus Netflix censors specific cast or voices.”

The move follows a difficult quarter for the streaming giant marked by historic loss of subscribers and an unexpected round of creative layoffs.

The company attributed its first membership decline in more than a decade to increased competition, password sharing, and macroeconomic factors such as inflation and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. However, critics of the service such as Tesla CEO Elon Musk have blamed Netflix’s financial difficulties on “wake up” content that Musk has called “undesirable.”

The company faced further scrutiny last October, when Netflix employees planned a walk-out to protest Dave Chappelle’s controversial standup special, “The Closer,” in which Chappell makes transphobic remarks. Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos defended the decision to air the show in an internal email to employees.

Netflix has been discussing cultural issues within the company for the past 18 months, a spokesperson told The Wall Street Journal. Recent updates to the website are intended to help potential employees “make a better informed decision about whether Netflix is the right company for them,” the spokesperson said.
