Reggie Fils-Aim thinks Nintendo is “playing with ideas” that could bring F-Zero back to life

Former Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aim has indicated that “some developers are playing with an idea” that could bring Nintendo’s space racer F-Zero back to life.

In an interview with VentureBeat, Fils-Aim confirmed that a developer rarely “makes a conscious decision not to continue supporting a franchise”, adding that – “at least during [his] Tenure” – Nintendo is always experimenting with ways to create new games … or apply new ideas to existing franchises.

“Why was F-Zero abandoned?” They said. “The insight I’ll share is that, at least during my tenure, Nintendo developers were always experimenting with different gameplay styles, always thinking about how to implement a unique experience back into the world.” Maybe, either for an existing franchise or maybe create a new one.

“My bet is that somewhere in the Kyoto development centers, some developer is playing around with an idea that can be applied to F-Zero. This is never the case, at least in my experience, where The company makes a conscious decision not to continue supporting the XYZ franchise. Historically it hasn’t worked that way, not when I was there.”

F-Zero was first released in 1990that is, 32 years agoand came to the SNES in ’91, but the series has been dormant since the 2004 F-Zero climax. It is widely considered to have inspired an entire generation of racing games, including Wipeout and Daytona USA.

ICYMI, the N64’s F-Zero X, is available to play on the Switch as part of the Nintendo Switch Online expansion’s library of retro titles. Following the impressive Mode 7 graphics of the SNES original, the F-Zero X added polygonal graphics, 30 character races, and blistering speed on winding, rollercoaster tracks at a smooth 60 fps.
