They create a smart gun with fingerprint control that could revolutionize the pistol market. Here are the keys.

The arms market has become, in just a few months, one of the markets that is obtaining the most financing. This is so due, above all, to the tensions that have been generated between the countries that are part of NATO and Russia as a result of the latter’s invasion of Ukraine. It is noted that there is a greater interest in the industry and, as usual in these cases, the money ends up going to products with a certain economic connection.

A good example of this phenomenon is shown by Biofire Technologies, a startup that has managed to come up with an innovation that could have great potential in the industry. It is a pistol that has a unique and differential function. The standardization of biometric data it seems not to have stayed in consumer electronics, as this company has been able to implement it in weapons. More specifically, it has managed to create the first fingerprint-compatible pistol.

Well, why can this step forward be very important? There are several keys in this regard. The first one is related to safety, since this measure would prevent accidents. It should be noted that in countries like the United States, accidental shootings are the leading cause of death in children completely preventable. Thanks to this measure, the trigger could not be activated as the fingerprint did not coincide with that of the true owner.

Biofire Technologies, in addition, would have seen other additional solutions to be exploited with this technology. A good example of this would be the impossibility of using a weapon, for example, with gloves. This can be vitally important if a murder does occur, as it is more likely that the person is more exposed by having to use their hand without protection. In addition, this would leave the assailant unprotected due, above all, to evidence such as the paraffin residue.

A novel weapon thanks to the use of a panel for fingerprint control

The company that is the protagonist of this investigation has achieved obtain total financing of 17 million dollars to carry out this curious project. The main exponent of the project, Kai Kloepfer, has assured that he will try to introduce this proposal given the impossibility of changing the weapons culture of the United States. It is worth noting the flexibility that exists in this country in relation to the possession of firearms at home.

The use of this technology would allow, among other cases, the use of firearms in suicides, one of the main causes of death in adolescents in the American country. Thanks to this bet, in addition, it could prevent a person from accessing a weapon that was not their property, something that could prevent, in fact, accidents and all kinds of murders. It is worth highlighting multiple episodes of this kind that have occurred in educational centers for decades.

The operation of this technology would be very simple, since the touch panel for fingerprint detection would be enabled at any time. Only if the fingerprint recorded in the memory could be detected could the trigger be activated. On the contrary, the firearm would be completely blocked. It is unknown, at the moment, if the technology that may reach the market will have a function to record multiple fingerprints.

Adding this technology will not require high doses of innovation

The technology to obtain fingerprints is very standardized, so it is easy to find solutions on the market suitable for being present in a pistol. The problem, perhaps, may be more focused on trigger activation, a system that is still unknown how it will be. Despite this, it is a mechanical proposalso it should not entail a major inconvenience in the medium term.

This issue has become so politicized that nothing is really being done, even for things that shouldn’t be political in any way, like children getting hold of guns… A smart gun is not a panacea, but we will. Kai Kloepfer, Founder and CEO of Biofire.

This former MIT employee has revealed that the main reason for the investigation is directly related to improving security. Thanks to this technology, it will be possible to avoid the death of many people due to domestic accidents resulting from carelessness or, why not say it, the improper use of a gun by an unauthorized person.

According to information from Axios, obtaining 17 million dollars in funds will be key to being able to create and market the first touch panel fingerprint gun. Are we at the beginning of a new generation of smart guns? Without a doubt, the greater interest that is being shown in the sector could bring new developments soon.
