Up to 2x faster SSD? With the new Phison E26 controller, it’s possible!

Speed is undoubtedly one of the basic factors of every computer. However, what many do not know is that it is affected not only by the quality of the processor or operating system, but also, for example, by the speed of storage. In this regard, solid-state drive (SSD) technology has come to the fore in recent years, offering several times the speed of a standard hard disk drive (HDD).

But what would you say if it went even faster? After the new ones, new SSD disks with PCI Express 5.0 interface were introduced, which are in comparison with the current generation more powerful twice, both in terms of read speed and write speed. This admirable progress was to be made using the AMD AM5 and LGA 1700 platforms.

As the server writes Cnews.czthe basis of success is to be the new Phison E26 controller, whose capacities the manufacturer presented to us during the Computex 2022 trade fair.

SSD is waiting for a big upgrade

The Phison E26 can be considered a direct successor to the E16 and E18 controllers. It features the 12 nm TSMC manufacturing process, as well as the E18, but the new PCIe 5.0 x4 interface has increased the number of contacts. You don’t have to forget about the larger chip case (1.6 x 1.6 cm). In terms of support, it can handle up to 32 NAND chips, while the capacity of M.2 modules can reach up to 32 TB.

The new generation will also be able to boast even faster writing and reading of data on one channel. In the last generation, respectively E18, it was 1,600 MT / s, after the new the limit is increased to 2,400 MT / s.

Within the architecture, two Cortex-R5 cores from ARM and three specialized CoXProcessor units can be counted on. These will allow performance to be accelerated during demanding operations, a quality that the previous generation did not have. Progress can also be noted in supporting the protocols. While older controllers could only work with NVMe 1.3 and 1.4, Phison E26 will also understand NVMe 2.0.

What was promised to us?

In terms of performance as such, sequential read speeds should be achieved 13,500 MB / sreading speed again 12,000 MB / s. At the same time, it is possible that they will increase slightly with future capacity updates. Another interesting fact is that in addition to performance, random reading should have increased, by up to 50% compared to the previous generation.

The Phison E26 should go on sale sometime in the fall.
