Don’t buy a new GPU – AMD’s RDNA 3 may be around the corner

A new rumor suggests that AMD’s RX7000 graphics card – based on the RDNA 3 architecture – could launch as soon as October.

Known AMD and Nvidia leaker Grimon55 says that AMD’s next-gen graphics cards are set to launch in late October, and they’ll be here “no later than mid-November.” While we haven’t seen an official release date, AMD’s graphics road map recently confirmed that the cards will launch before the end of 2022.

The only official news AMD shared is that the cards offer a 50% improvement in performance per watt over the previous generation. Rumors suggest an even higher performance. One leaker said the RX 7000 GPU is 130% faster than the previous generation, which could put AMD in the race to have the best graphics card on the market.

Greymon’s rumor comes at an interesting time. GPU prices are falling, and many graphics cards are available at or below list price. While AMD’s current offerings are impressive, rumors point to next-generation cards offering massive performance enhancements. Some speculations say that even the entry-level RX 7000 GPU will be able to beat the mighty RX 6900 XT.

AMD isn’t the only one releasing new GPUs this year. We also expect Nvidia to release its own RTX 40-series graphics cards. Nvidia hasn’t confirmed if it’s working on these cards as well, but the company’s general release cycle suggests new graphics cards are on the way.

The leakers say that Nvidia’s next-gen GPUs will use a 4nm manufacturing process, which could propel Team Green. However, rumors from the past several months point to the RTX 40-series GPUs drawing an obscene amount of power. We don’t have official specs from AMD or Nvidia, but murmurs suggest that AMD’s cards may be more efficient.

Although we don’t have a definitive release date from AMD, we’ll almost certainly see AMD’s Ryzen 7000 CPUs before the next-gen GPUs arrive. AMD confirmed that the Ryzen 7000 CPUs will launch in early fall and confirmed several key specs (such as whether the flagship chip will come with 16 cores). Given that we have more confirmed details about the Ryzen 7000, we expect them first.

Whichever comes first, we expect the Ryzen 7000 and RX 7000 to launch within a few months (or maybe weeks) of each other. The RX7000 GPU is rumored to support PCIE 5.0, and the Ryzen 700 is AMD’s first platform to support the new PCIE standard. Although AMD has confirmed that Ryzen 7000 GPUs are coming in 2022, a recently released Ryzen road map confirms that mobile options won’t arrive until early 2023.

This isn’t a good time to buy a new GPU if you want the best performance, but graphics card prices could rise again. The GPU crunch is over, but it’s possible that next-gen options from AMD and Nvidia drive up prices again.
