New Samsung patent reveals surprising rollable phone design

Samsung has reportedly filed a patent for 10 new foldable phone designs. These include smartphones with rollable, scrollable and slideable displays. The patents represent Samsung’s vision for the future of foldable phones. Apple was the first to report about these new patents, published by the World Intellectual Property Organization. Recently, 10 more patents were filed by Samsung, bringing the total number of patents to 20.

The Korean tech giant already dominates the foldable smartphone segment with its Fold and Flip series of smartphones. And these patents indicate that the brand is serious about taking its foldable game up a notch. Samsung may soon be planning to launch a slideout foldable phone. The company demonstrated a multi-rollable phone prototype in May, adding more weight to its plans to launch a slideout-style phone. While patents don’t always translate into actual products, they do offer a behind the scenes glimpse of what the future might hold.

As for these latest patents, there are a few things that stand out. One of the patents (seen above) shows a device with a standard smartphone-like body. However, one end extends to turn the device into a small tablet. It has the same general idea of handsets like the Z Fold 4, but it gets a phone/tablet hybrid with a different design.

Another patent shows what such a rollable would look like from the backside (above). Here, we see that the back is divided into two sections, with a rollable display joining them in the middle. It looks like it could pose a whole assortment of durability concerns, but it’s still exciting to see Samsung with other form factors like this one.

SamMobile recently revealed the concept design of Samsung’s alleged rollable display phone in collaboration with Jermaine Smit, better known as the Concept Creator. This concept gives us a representation of what Samsung’s future rollable phones might look like. In the picture, we can see the phone with a display that wraps around the rear panel. There is a thick bar on the right side of the display which appears to be holding the rear camera module. We believe that performance will expand horizontally like one of TCL’s rollable performance concepts.

Samsung hasn’t announced any details about its upcoming slideable phone yet, and it will likely take some time before that changes. We are expecting Samsung to continue its foldable family with the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 later this year. However, the launch of a slideout handset still seems to be a way off.
