an episode of for all Mankind Featuring some retro Apple technology that real people in the 1990s could only dream of: an Apple Newton with a color screen. And one that can make video calls!

One of the show’s producers revealed a clever trick.

Difficult! color in apple newton for all Mankind is actually an iphone

When it debuted in 1992, the Apple Newton MessagePad was far ahead of its time. The handheld device had a touch-sensitive screen, handwriting recognition, hard disk and other advanced features.

What it didn’t have was a color display. And it certainly couldn’t make video callsthe first version of Wi-Fi wouldn’t come along until 1997.

But recently the audience for all Mankind The episode saw a color Newton which was used for video chatting. It fits in with the show, which is an alternate history science fiction series about the people who colonized Mars in the 1990s.

And now we know how it was done. Producer Ben McGinnis revealed the secret on Thursday via twitter,

“Technology progressed rapidly in the 1990s @forallmankind_alt-history!” McGinnis said. “All of us @Apple nerds had a blast making (and playing with) our modified Newton’s removable camera and video call! The props even fit inside an #iPhone 12 Pro Max.”
