Instagram, the new tool detects your age through the selfie cam (and it works!)

Instagram will be able to tell how old you are just by looking at your face. This will be possible thanks to Yotia verification method based on artificial intelligence that offers the possibility of estimate the subject’s age via face scan.

The tool takes several into consideration facial parameters and his estimate is indeed very accurate. The margin of error is around 2.5 years, but the accuracy is generally excellent.

Specifically, Yoti’s percentage accuracy in recognizing individuals under the age of 18 or 25 is 98.8%. Below is a table with one error estimate based on gender, skin color and actual age group:

Yoti (error estimated in years)

The further advantage concerns security, since Yoti orders the immediate removal of the recorded video for the purpose of recognition (more details on its policy are available here).

Currently, the Yoti verification method is only available for US users; in short, we will have to wait a bit before it is also integrated into the European version of Instagram. On the other hand, it must be said that the British and German governments have already certified the validity of this method, so Yoti could be implemented soon. Until then, however, the only methods to verify that a user is of the age that you declare remain the sending of an identification document and the request for confirmation sent to three profiles among those below.

If you want to try it in preview, you can go to this address and follow the instructions on the screen. In practice, you just need to find a bright area, remove any hats that could cast a shadow and enable access to the camera. However, it is not necessary to take off your glasses if you are wearing them.

Before proceeding, you are reiterated that the images are not stored or used for other hidden purposes. Also, Yoti can’t match faces with people’s names, so your identity is safe.

After reading the terms of use, all you have to do is press the button Start age estimation. At this point the camera will open; when ready, click / tap the button Estimate your age and see if the result corresponds to your age: what do you think, did he take us?
