Overwatch 2 will replace the current game at launch

As previously understood, Overwatch 2 will replace the existing game at launch. In short, current owners of Overwatch will download a patch and, along with all associated changes to multiplayer, the game will become Overwatch 2. For example, the game will switch to a 5v5 format and feature various balance changes. The promised PvE campaign mode is expected to release in 2023.

The clarification came via a Reddit AMA. In a post from Overwatch 2 game director, Aaron Keller, said that the game’s launch on October 4th represents the beginning of Early Access. “We’re using the term Early Access to indicate that this is just the beginning of a lot of new things to come in the game,” he said. The plan to replace the original Overwatch also fits with the new free-to-play model. According to Roadmap Blizzard’s recent big content updates will come seasonally, every nine weeks. Season 1 will feature Sojourn and Junker Queen as well as a new map. You can find out more about the game’s launch in GameSpot’s guide to what we know about Overwatch 2 and our interview with Aaron Keller.

Any news regarding Overwatch 2 comes in the context of allegations of sexual harassment and abuse, as well as unionization efforts at developer and publisher Activision Blizzard. Microsoft has agreed to recognize a consortium after it recently acquired Activision Blizzard. In the meantime, however, shareholders voted to keep CEO Bobby Kotick on the board of directors. Despite demands from several employees that he resign, it appears he will remain in place until 2023.
