How they steal your Instagram account

As explained in the thread, there are several ways these scammers try to steal your Instagram account. Usually contact through direct messagesalways offering some challenges that would give you an economic reward, these are some that PinkyBoyz describes.

  • Find the error in an image. One of the preferred forms of contact of this type of person is to send you an image in which you must find the error, in case you do, they offer you a financial reward, something like: “I’ll give you $50, if you find the error”. The error is often easy to spot and when you respond they tell you the steps to take to earn your reward: change the “business verification” email in Instagram Settings. This is very dangerous as, once changed, they can change your account password and “steal” it from you.
  • Through a message with a link. They usually contact you asking for a favor: they can’t access their Instagram account and they ask you to leave them your phone number to gain access. If you access, they would tell you that a message will arrive to your number and that you should not press it, you should take a screenshot and send it to them. What that link does is restore the email of your account, being able to access them and steal your Instagram.
  • Posing as investors. With the excuses of cryptocurrencies, many of these hackers try to steal Instagram accounts and you have to be careful. In fact, they use stolen user accounts to promote supposed investments in cryptocurrencies. In these cases, they usually ask you to download the Bitso app and make a transfer, promising that they will return double. Don’t do it as you will never see your money again.
