But as Android has evolved into a more mature operating system, it’s easy to see a world where many users may be slowly breaking out of their old habits.

As apps like Nova Launcher and Action Launcher have stuck, new competition from Niagara, Lawnchair, and even Microsoft has helped propel the community forward. There are so many excellent launcher apps to choose from these days, it can be an overwhelming experience indeed.

Plus, phone makers like Samsung and Google have put in even more effort to make their own default home screen experience good enough to keep users around. Even for someone who used to spend hours customizing their mobile experience, it can be tempting to stick with what’s included in the out-of-box UI.
