The Google app is finally starting to look like it was made for Android 13

Google’s flagship app gets some of the content you love

When Google launched Android 12, Google introduced its design language Material You development, and many of the company’s apps were quick to adopt the new, wallpaper color-based design. However, even after two years there is still work to be done. The company’s flagship product, Search, was one of the last big apps to get the change, but it’s finally happening with the current beta version 14.4, which is adding new design elements to all Android phones.

You might not notice the difference right away when you launch the Google app for the first time after installing the 14.4 update. On the Discover and Search screens, the new Material Design look is only applied to the bottom bar, with the active tab now in the shape of a pill. Right now, this part of the interface doesn’t even follow your phone’s color theme, so it’s still a work in progress. The rest of the interface is unchanged, with the search bar and Discover Articles appearing the way you’re used to.

However, things look a bit better in other parts of the app. Google Apps introduces new account switcher which is now also available on the web. You can access it by tapping your profile image in the top right. This panel appears in Material U colors based on your wallpaper. Compared to the previous iteration, it offers more rounded corners and visually groups the most important options into distinct additional boxes.

When you go to Settings, you’ll find a similar redesign, though here, content you’re still missing. The Settings search option is now more prominent, appearing as a small magnifying glass icon next to it just below the title. on individual pages like General You’ll also notice that the Google app has an MD3 toggle, which looks a bit different from what we’ve seen in other apps so far. 9to5Google notes that the Google app is one of the first, if not the first Google app, to use this design.

While Google still has some work to do, especially when it comes to the search interface, the company has made big strides with this redesign. It ultimately provides a more consistent look across your system, with one of the most important apps now in line with the rest of Google apps and some third-party services. The new knowledge panels that appear when you look at topics of interest like public figures, movies, etc. are now even more spaced.

The Google app update is currently being rolled out to those who have joined the beta program on the Play Store. If you want to automatically revert back to the stable channel once you exceed this version number, you can get that on APK Mirror as well.
