During a recent interview with Eddie Murphy talked about his readiness to reprise the role of Donkey in Theoretical Shrek 5. The actor believes that the character he plays has great potential for a spin-off that received Puss in Boots:

If they ever asked me to do another Shrek, I wouldn’t hesitate two seconds. I love Donkey. When they made the Puss in Boots movies, I thought, “They should do a Donkey movie. Donkey is funnier than Puss in Boots. Don’t get me wrong, I love Puss in Boots. However, he is not as funny as Donkey.

The journalist suggested that Eddie Murphy could use his influence to make a standalone film about Donkey. However, the actor replied that everything depends on Dreamworks and they really have to want to create such a production. Simultaneously, Murphy added that he was sitting ready. All it takes is a call from the studio and you can start working.

For now, it seems there are more chances for the actor to return in the role of Donkey in Shrek 5. The fact that the production is to be created at the beginning of December 2022 was revealed by Antonio Banderas in an interview. The actor who voices Puss in Boots said that fans may yet hear him againbecause Shrek is likely to return with a new movie.

Self-production with Donkey in the lead role would certainly be an interesting diversion to the universe created by Dreamworks. The faithful companion of the green ogre has been entertaining viewers since the first part of the series and has so far regularly appeared in subsequent productions. The creation of a spin-off seems to be something natural.
