For years, Apple has put a lot of effort into developing accessibility features that allow devices like the iPhone and iPad to be used by users with specific visual, cognitive, hearing, and mobility needs. In this regard, there are many testimonials that confirm the effectiveness with which the company addresses these requirements.
All of these features are available on iPhone and iPad from the Accessibility section, and below we share ten of the most prominent.
10 accessibility settings on iPhone and iPad that you should know about
Zoom
Thanks to this function we can enlarge images and texts, in order to see the content more clearly. There are several alternatives to access this option:
Activate zoom from Accessibility.
- go to Settings
- Choose Accessibility.
- Click on the Zoom option. Once there you can activate the function and follow the instructions to manipulate the zoom on the screen:
- Double tap with three fingers to zoom in.
- Drag with three fingers to move around the screen.
- Double-tap with three fingers and drag to zoom.Activate Zoom in the camera or from the Magnifying app.
Apple offers several solutions to zoom text and images from the iPhone
Another way to take advantage of zoom on iPhone is by using the camera to zoom in on your real world environment or by opening the app Magnifying glass from your home screen.
Screen and text size
This accessibility option offers a host of ways to improve the clarity of content on the iPhone screen, thanks to options like make text bold, increase text size range, add on/off labels to buttons, reduce transparency and increase contrast. All of these settings are applied instantly and none of them require the iPhone to reboot.
Motion
Movement, offers an option that allows “Reduce movement” to put down many animations, available on iOS. Turning it on will reduce UI motion, including icon parallax.
content read
This feature allows you to read a text just by selecting it, with a different voice and adjust the speaking speed if the default value is too fast or slow.
- go to Settings.
- Select the option Accessibility.
- search and activate Read Screen.
- Once activated, it is enough to slide two fingers down from the notch, for the iPhone to read the content.
Tap
Touch helps the use of the iPhone in case you have difficulty touching the screen, putting the devices various configurations to execute specific actions with a single movement. Specifically, the “Easy Reach” feature allows you to reach the top of the screen with just a double tap on the home button. For it:
- go to Settings.
- Select the option Accessibility.
- Choose Easy reach.
- Test the settings by double tapping on the home button.
- When finished, just press on the black space to return the screen to its place.
Single tap and double tap
Also available in option Tap in Accessibility, the options “single tap” and “double tap” allow you to assign an action to each of these shortcuts. Thus, actions such as “rotate screen” either “shake to undo”for example.
To find this option look for:
- go to Settings.
- Select the option Accessibility.
- Choose Tap among the available options.
- Once there, press AssistiveTouch which will take you to another screen.
- Activate the option AssistiveTouch and scroll down you will see the custom actions.
- choose between “single tap”, “double tap”.
- Selecting any of the above options will display a menu of actions that will be activated by touching the floating menu once or twice depending on the option we have chosen.
sound recognition
This function allows us to make our iPhone listen to specific sounds (animals, sirens, bells) and notify us when they occur. Although it is designed for people with hearing disabilities, it has applications for people without specific needs, but who are distracted by music, games or television. When activating, keep in mind that while it is activated, Siri is deactivated.
- go to Settings.

- Activate the option Sound recognition.
- Select the type of sound and tone to identify it from the available options.
Audiovisual
Within Audio/Visual, there is the Mono Audio option, intended for people who cannot hear equally through both ears, but they also give you the option to “mix” stereo audio when you’re only using a single earbud. To activate it, follow the steps below:
- go to Settings.
- Select the option Accessibility.
- Look for the option Audiovisual.
- select and activate mono sound among the available options.
guided access
Thanks to this option we can keep our iPhone within a single application, protected by a passcode and a timer, and even disable parts of the screen. This can be useful when you’re handing your iPhone to someone else (like a kid), but also for games and other immersive apps that might otherwise be affected by the Home prompt. To start this configuration, follow the steps below:
- Go to Settings.
- Select the option Accessibility.
- press on Guided access.
Keep your device private with Guided Access
- Enter a access code four digits.
- Go to the app you want to share.
- Triple-click the Home button.
- A screen will appear indicating that you have started Guided Access. And in this way you can only interact with this app.
- To finish guided access, press the finish option located at the top left of the screen.
quick function
This menu allows you to control all sorts of things, including the aforementioned reduced transparency and increased contrast with a triple press of the home button.
Control many actions at once from Quick Access
- go to Settings.
- Select the option Accessibility.
- press Quick function.
- Choose the options you want to add.
