Last month we were able to learn about the great news in the world of Smart TVs through the last meeting at CES, where a multitude of manufacturers announced their line of smart TVs for 2023. However, TP Vision (Philips) has decided to show its news independently, preparing a whole new line of OLED, MiniLED and LCD-LED televisions for this year.
The firm thus welcomes its Philips OLED+908 and OLED808 televisions as part of its new range of self-emissive diode technology televisions, ‘The Xtra’ as new models with MiniLED technology and a new generation of ‘The One’, its LCD-LED models designed for the mid-range and entry-level. Under these lines we tell you all the secrets of their new televisions.
OLED+908, more brightness in a new panel with microlenses and Ambilight ‘Next gen’ system
The jewel in TP Vision’s crown for this year is without a doubt the OLED+908, a model that includes all the technologies of its current premium model, the OLED+907, while also vastly improves various aspects of your panel technology.
The firm stands out in the OLED+908 its new ‘META OLED’ panel, based on the ‘OLED EX’ technology patented by LG, although calibrated by TP Vision. This new panel makes use of the technology of Micro Lens Array (MLA) and the algorithm that LG Display names as ‘META’ to provide its users with an increase in brightness of up to 70%translating into a peak brightness of up to 2,100 nits.
Thus, the improvement of the ‘META OLED’ panel is achieved through a hardware component (the microlens matrix) and software (the META algorithm). The manufacturer ensures that, in addition to the increase in brightness, users will also be able to enjoy an improvement in viewing angles and energy efficiency.
To all this we must add the seventh generation P5 AI processor, which offers an improved version of its Ambient Intelligence system to adjust the brightness delivered by the television, the gamut and the color response of the screen in real time. This system can measure the color temperature of the room through its new XYZ light sensor, matching the white point of the image to the ambient lighting and thus optimizing the viewing experience.
Unsurprisingly, Philips also puts all the meat on the grill when it comes to gaming, so in addition to its support for Dolby Vision, its 4K panel also offers a panel with a refresh rate of 120 Hz 48 Gbps bandwidth and 12-bit depth, HDMI 2.1 e-ARC, and VRR support via FreeSync Premium and G-Sync. Along with all this, the firm also guarantees ALLM modes to reduce the response time in games through its Auto Game and Auto-Low-Latency modes.
To expand the immersion of the scenes that users will see on this TV, the OLED+908 comes embedded with the latest generation of its Ambilight technology, something that is a house brand at Philips. Ambilight ‘Next Gen’ could already be presented last year on its high-end televisions, and this time we will also see this technology on the company’s next televisions. Of course, for the moment this latest version will also be exclusive for the high-end of its televisions.
TP Vision has also chosen Google TV as the operating system for its entire new range of Philips OLED TVs.
Ambilight Next Gen extends the experience of its predecessor with a three-sided lighting system, also offering a greater number of illuminated areas and an improved system that increases the precision of lighting in scenes.
At the height of its image quality is also its Bowers & Wilkins sound system, a sound bar integrated into the panel that offers 3.1 sound at a maximum power of 80 W. The sound system integrates six front-mounted transducers and a rear-mounted subwoofer supported by its four passive radiators, providing deep bass.
As in past generations, TP Vision also has chosen Google TV as operating system for its entire new range of Philips OLED TVs. In this way, users will be able to enjoy the most up-to-date version of Google’s operating system for Smart TV.
With Google TV, users are guaranteed a complete content experience, being able to download all kinds of applications and enjoy all streaming content platforms such as Netflix, Prime Video, HBO Max, Disney+ and company. That also means it will be compatible with all smart home features, including your Google Assistant.
Regarding its design, the television shows its most minimalist side with an extra-thin metal bezel in a dark tone, matching the mesh of its Kvadrat Audiomix speakers. In addition, the TV offers a new metal support for the frame with a glossy black finish.
Among its extras it is also worth highlighting its new remote control with rechargeable battery and USB-C connection, which has a motion sensor that detects when it has risen from a surface to activate the backlight of its keys.
OLED808, without microlenses but with all the characteristics of a high-end OLED
TP Vision once again offers two new models in its range of OLED televisions this year. Although we have already mentioned all the benefits of the OLED+908, on a step a little lower is the OLED808. And since we have already specified very well everything that its older brother brings, in this television we are going to focus on what it does not have as a differentiation technique.
The great novelty of the OLED+908 is its new ‘META OLED’ panel with microlens matrix and ‘META’ algorithm to increase brightness. In the OLED808 we lose this and Philips incorporates in this case a panel based on LG Display’s OLED EX technology with a maximum brightness of up to 1,000 nits.
When it comes to imaging and processor technologies, this tv is identicalso despite losing the new brightness boost technology, we still have the seventh generation P5 AI processor, Ambient Intelligence V2 system, all the gaming-focused technologies described above and Ambilight Next Gen to increase immersion to through this well-known rear lighting system.
Another difference with respect to its older brother is in its sound system. And in this case we have a 2.1 channel sound system with up to 70 W of power. If we go to the 42-inch model, it can be said that the sound system drops to 50 W.
TP Vision also highlights the EVO swivel mount included in most OLED808 models. The one exception is its 77-inch model, which features new satin chrome and metal flat sliders.
Like the OLED+908, TP Vision It also includes Google TV as an operating system for this TV, so you’ll be more than equipped to enjoy all kinds of content and smart home features.
New series “The Xtra” with MiniLED panel
Leaving aside its OLED models, the firm has also presented a new series: “The Xtra”. This is a new line of televisions with which TP Vision will promote its MiniLED technology. The first generation of this new series has been presented together with the aforementioned OLED models, also offering very interesting features.
Although the OLED range is still considered by TP Visin as its most advanced and complete line of televisions, in The Xtra we also find full performance and outstanding features through two new models.
On the one hand, the 9308 offers a 4K MiniLED panel with up to 1,000 nits of maximum brightness, panel with 98% WCG DCI color spectrum and 120Hz refresh rate. Along with all this, Philips also incorporates its Ambilight system, although in this case it is not as precise as its OLED models.
Regarding its sound system, the Philips 9308 incorporates a 2.1-channel front system and up to 64 W of maximum power offered by Bowers & Wilkins.
The Xtra also includes another television, the 9008, being slightly inferior to its older brother. In this case we find a sound system one step below, with a 2.1-channel front system with up to 40 W of maximum power. Of course, we continue to enjoy your 120 Hz panel and up to 1,000 nits of maximum brightness.
It should be noted that “The Xtra” is the only Philips range of 2023 that does not include Google TV as an operating system. In this case, a personalized Smart TV experience from TP Vision has been chosen.
The One, its most accessible models and with Google TV
In the mid-range and entry-level we have the new generation of televisions “The One”, starring the Philips 8808 and 8507 models. Here we find two televisions that continue to offer the same level of performance than in the premium range of Philips, since they incorporate the same seventh generation P5 AI processor.
However, Philips cuts back on image quality, offering LCD-LED panels in this case. The main difference between both models is the refresh rate of your panel. And it is that the 8808 incorporates a 120 Hz panelwhile the 8507 stays at 60 Hz.
The good thing is that both models will have the latest version of Google TV, like the OLED models of the firm. In this way, “The Xtra” is the only TP Vision series that will offer its own operating system.
Price and availability
The OLED+908 will hit stores in fall 2023. TP Vision’s most premium range will land in 55, 65 and 77-inch versions.
In the case of the OLED808, the firm has not presented a date, although it confirms that the model will arrive in 48, 55, 65 and 77-inch versions.
Regarding the family of MiniLED televisions, they are expected to land during the third quarter of 2023 on 55 and 65-inch models. The Philips 9008 will add in addition to these a 75-inch version.
Finally, TP Vision confirms that its next generation of televisions The One will land somewhere in the second quarter of 2023. The Philips 8808 will arrive in versions of 43, 50, 55, 65, 75 and 85 inches, while the 8508 will make an appearance in 43, 50, 55 and 65 inches.
Regarding prices, the firm has not yet offered information in this regard, so we will have to wait until it makes a decision.
