Do I need to learn JavaScript to create games in RPG Maker?


Video game development has changed a lot in recent years. There are many engines to create our own video games depending on the theme we are thinking about. But, if what we want is to create a good role-playing game, the best known and most used IDE in the world is RPG Maker.

And it is true that, if we use a very advanced IDE, such as Unity or Unreal Engine, without having knowledge of C++, C# and JavaScript, we are not going to be able to do much. However, RPG Maker is a somewhat different program. Thanks to him we will be able create our own games in a very clear and simple interface in which we will be able to configure most of the actions by dragging and dropping elements. However, if we want to delve into the game engine, things get complicated, and we may already need to modify the game code. But do we really need to know how to program like experts?

Early versions of this program used a programming language called Ruby Game Scripting System. However, if we already use a more modern version of the program, we will find that the base language used is also more modern: JavaScript.

However, we must bear in mind that the use of this language is optional, and that is that if we can shape the game with the functions that the program offers us, we do not need to touch anything else.

What if we want to give the game more depth, and we don’t know programming? Also, there would be no problem with it. And it is that, in the RPG Maker forums themselves, as well as in many web pages, we will find a large number of scripts created by other users, and shared on the Internet, that we can borrow to shape our game. And all this without the need to learn JavaScript, or any other programming language.

Of course, on the net we can find many programming courses that will allow us to acquire general knowledge about the language that we want, for example, JavaScript.
