Worry if your Wi-Fi goes below this speed

It is impossible to have the maximum speed over Wi-Fi if you move away from the router. Even if you want to, you won’t achieve it. And it’s something normal. However, it is necessary to have at least a minimum speed to be able to navigate correctly and avoid problems. We are going to tell you what Wi-Fi speed you should have, at a minimum, and why you should worry if it drops below that figure. We are also going to explain to you what you can do to try to achieve greater speed and stability.

For example, you may have a 600 Mbps fiber optic contract at home. You connect to the router, do a test connected to the 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and you get that speed or something very close. However, you walk away to another room, do that same test, and you see that the speed has dropped quite a bit. That can be normal, as long as it is kept to a minimum.

Minimum Wi-Fi speed at home

The minimum speed you should have for Wi-Fi, at least for normal use, is 25Mbps. Why do we say this figure? For example, this is what platforms like Netflix recommend to be able to watch streaming content in 4K. If you are going to connect the television wirelessly, as well as a mobile phone or computer, to watch series or movies, you should have at least this speed.

If the speed you receive is less than those 25 Mbps, then you should be worried. You should take measures to try to improve the network and not have problems. You can see why this happens, analyze if it is a failure of the receiver, the router or simply being too far from the access point.

To browse the Internet, use email, applications like WhatsApp or social networks, less than that speed is really enough. However, to watch streaming content, make a video call, play online or use the cloud, we recommend having at least 25 Mbps. Logically, if you get more, much better.

Improve your home network

What can you do to improve your home network? If you do a speed test and see that you are getting less than those 25 Mbps that we mentioned, you should take action. You can try change router location. Move it away from interference, such as Bluetooth devices, as well as walls. Also avoid having your devices in areas where the signal reaches worse.

You can choose to buy a device to help you improve the signal. For example, you can use Wi-Fi repeaters, Mesh systems or PLC devices. All of these options allow you to carry the connection from one place to another in the home. They will help you have more optimal coverage for your daily life.

In case you cannot improve Wi-Fi, a possible solution is connect by cable. You will have to carry out an installation, since the idea is to take an Ethernet cable from the router to the device where you are going to connect. This will undoubtedly provide greater stability and also speed when connecting.

In short, it is important to have a minimum Wi-Fi speed. If you have less than 25 Mbps, you should be concerned and take action. It is the minimum recommended to, for example, watch streaming content of the highest quality and without interruptions.
