Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 4 gets May 2022 security patch in new update

What you need to know

  • The May 2022 security patch for Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 4 has started arriving in the United States.
  • Without any major changes, Samsung has fixed minor bugs and improved the overall performance of the smartwatch.
  • However, Google Assistant support is still missing from the latest update.

Samsung has started rolling out a new update to the Galaxy Watch 4 in the United States, bringing with it the May 2022 security patch and some improvements.

The latest update, which comes in at around 100MB, improves the smartwatch’s system stability and reliability (via SamMobile). In its changelog, Samsung also mentions “stabilization code for watch operation” in its changelog, although it is not clear what this is for.

Other than that, the update doesn’t bring any significant changes to the wearable device. This means the smartwatch still lacks the Google Assistant support you were hoping for.

Verizon prematurely referred to the voice assistant in the changelog for the smartwatch’s update late last month. It turned out that the feature was not enabled, and the carrier was quick to remove any mention of Assistant from the changelog.

Anyway, if a recent ad by Samsung is any indication, the digital assistant will soon be available on Samsung’s best Android smartwatches. In this, a clip is seen activating the assistant with the voice of a user. Google has also said earlier that the app will be available on the Galaxy Watch 4 in the coming months.

The latest update has firmware version R870XXU1FVD4. If you live in the US, you should be able to download it through the Galaxy Wearable app. Users in other regions should expect to receive the update soon.

If you’re looking for one of the best smartwatches, the Galaxy Watch 4 is hard to beat. Not only is it the only Wear OS 3 watch available, but it has deep integration with your favorite Android phone for fitness tracking, app support, and everything in between.
