We’re months away from its anticipated release, but Google is already giving us an early glimpse of the upcoming Pixel 7 series at Google I/O 2022, which includes full renders of the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro in multiple colors. And if you’ve seen the recent leaks of the iPhone 14 in a quirky way, it will sound familiar, with a similar pill-and-dot cutout for the rear cameras.
The overall industrial design remains almost the same as that of the previous generation. Google is sticking with a visor-like camera bar (which Google calls the “Pixel Camera Bar”), but it looks like the company is swapping out the plastic curves and rectangular glass expanses for a RoboCop-looking metal frame that has Even more included are the visors. This… is an interesting look. Earlier leaks had shown a similar oval shape around the camera on the back of the phone, but such styling was not immediately apparent at the time.

Possible camera details for the Pixel 7 series are rumored to be unchanged, with Google speculating to stick with the same primary and ultra-wide sensors as last year’s Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. Google isn’t used to replacing its camera sensors frequently, because it tunes its image processing so precisely for each one, so it’s quite possible we’ll be seeing these stick around for even longer.
I’m not sure if these renders are meant to scale, but comparing the relative height in pure pixels (te he) of the rendered images, the Pixel 7 again looks like it won’t be much smaller than the Pixel 7 Pro, There is a difference of about 3-4% in apparent height between the two models. This essentially matches the size relationship between the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, although some rumors have indicated that the Pixel 7 will have a slightly smaller screen than the Pixel 6. Earlier leaks also indicated a slightly smaller size. The distinction may be because the renders aren’t to scale, or the Pixel 7 Pro is too small, or something else is going on.
If these renders are accurate, Google could go with more faux colors for the 7 series, with black and white models for both sizes. The 7 Pro features a somewhat funky copperish and green color scheme, while the 7 sports yellow chiffon with gold metallic accents. Again, the Pro line looks like it’s getting a polished metal finish, while the non-Pro’s are matte (both aluminum).
Google has confirmed that the Pixel 7 will still be powered by Tensor, with the company’s plans to power the phone with a “next generation” of in-house chipsets. Solid speeds and feeds weren’t provided, but Google offered fast performance and the typical technical platitudes for new technologies. Earlier leaks indicate that we may see a chip called the GS102, codenamed “Cloudipper”, along with another Samsung-made modem, the g5300b. They are expected to ship with Android 13.
Google has another phone up its sleeve today, with the Tensor-powered Pixel 6a landing on July 28 at the same price as the (excellent) Pixel 5a at $449. At the keynote, Google announced the Pixel Watch, Pixel Buds Pro, an as-yet-unnamed Tensor-powered Android tablet coming in 2023, and Google’s first pair of AR Glasses since Glass was announced a decade ago .
