Experts are on Charlo’s side

IBF, WBA and WBC junior middleweight champion ‘Charlo’ is being widely tipped to ease the judges’ decision, at least this time around. He was supported by many, including Ring Magazine’s Anson Wainwright and former WBO junior-featherweight champion Duke Mackenzie.

Wainwright believes Charlo may have learned a lot from the first bout, so he “sets things to the side by razor thin split decision.” McKenzie doesn’t think things will be that close again, and is picking up Charloe to settle the rematch with his “trademark right hand” and forcing a TKO “about round nine or 10.”

Stoppage is a smart prediction for a fighter who has 18 knockouts to his 34-1-1 record. History is also on Charloe’s side as the 31-year-old stopped Tony Harrison in 2019, a year after the latter won by decision.

It is the only loss in Charlo’s career, and John Ann Hansen of SB Nation’s Bad Left Hook believes power will make a difference this time around, as against Harrison: “Last time, Castano played Charloe. He was hurt early, but Charlo’s power hit a big mark on a fight and limited Castano’s work in the closing round. And in the only other rematch of Charlo’s career, he fought more aggressively and defeated Tony Harrison for three. dropped the bar.”

Charlo has his supporters, but here are those who believe in Castano’s power and strategy. Among them, Brian Campbell of CBS Sports believes that Cassato “succeeded in using a combination of mixed aggression with responsible defense to pull off Charlo’s jab (he finished in 287 for 18.5 according to CompuBox). just landed at 53) and came in regularly.”

Compubox punch stats from the first fight show see WBO titleholder attach Castano to the body more often and take down even heavier shots:
