$10,000 photography kit recovered in Australia thanks to Apple Airtags

A photographer in Australia has been able to recover a stolen camera kit worth over $10,000 thanks to well-stocked Apple Air Tags. Graham Tait was extremely lucky as the thief did not notice the tracking devices attached to his gear, meaning he was able to inform the authorities who returned him safely.

As a photographer, I can’t think of anything worse than having my kit stolen. Losing it or breaking it on your own is one thing, but getting someone to take it from you is a different ball game. Just in case it ever does, it’s worth investing in the best camera insurance for your photography kit to cover you in case the unthinkable happens. You’ll still have to wait while the insurance company settles it and you may end up paying a hefty extra, but at least you won’t have to use your own money to replace everything.

Luckily for Tait, he didn’t have to go down the insurance route. The thief was too busy to notice the Apple Air tag attached to his camera kit, which included a GoPro, a Sony RX10, his laptop, and his wallet.

According to Peta Pixel, the incident took place at a hotel car park in southern Australia where the Sydney-based photographer was on vacation. As soon as Tait realized this, he was able to track down the device with the Find My app and contact the officers who arrested the alleged perpetrator.

Apple AirTags work by sending a Bluetooth signal to nearby devices in Find My Network. These devices then send the location of your AirTag to iCloud and when you go to the Find My app, it is displayed on a map. For Accurate Find Mode to work, you’ll need an iPhone 11 or newer—but as long as you’re running iOS 14.5 or above, you should be able to get the approximate location of your missing item.

Even though Apple Airtags have been used for their purpose in Tait’s case, it is becoming increasingly common for criminals to use them to steal cars or, even more frighteningly, to chase women. Earlier this year, a young mother found an Apple AirTag that didn’t belong to her as she was traveling from Texas to Maine, while another in Atlanta was informed that she had an AirTag in her car that she was unable to locate. was unable.

Sometimes theft is unavoidable, but if possible, try not to leave expensive kits unattended in your car. When traveling on public transport, make sure it is attached to you and be cautious when traveling in countries where pickpocketing is extremely common. Most camera theft stories don’t have a happy ending, but it’s nice to know that it did. The Apple Air Tag starts at just $/£29 for a single tag or $/£99 for a set of four, so it may be worth the investment.
